According to a new report, Chloe Zhao is very close to signing on the dotted line as a director for Kevin Feige’s upcoming Star Wars film.

The report comes from One Take News, which is run by Big Screen Leaks. Big Screen Leaks were first to reveal the release day for The Book of Boba Fett trailer, knew about issues with Rogue Squadron and have been reporting accurate information on other upcoming releases such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Matrix: Resurrections.

The report states that Academy Award winner, Zhao hasn’t signed on just yet, but is very close to doing so and was always considered a top choice by those involved in the production. If true Zhao then the film is truly a Marvel Studios affair as she joins executive producer Kevin Feige and writer, Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) on the project.

During her press run for her latest release Eternals for Marvel Studios and Disney, Zhao has expressed interest and spoken fondly regarding Star Wars. During an interview with Empire, Zhao said, “I have to tread carefully with what I say here” when asked if she’d one day like to work on a Star Wars film.

Despite Zhao’s Eternals becoming Marvel Studios’ first rated rotten film, I think she’s an incredible director and to have her attached to any Star Wars film would be an inspired choice. Hopefully if true we get confirmation soon enough, but with the film likely not releasing until 2027 after Taika Waititi’s film in 2025, we may be waiting a little while longer.
