In the newly released Empire Magazine focusing on The Book of Boba Fett, it is mentioned that Rangers will be absorbed into other Star Wars series including The Mandalorian.

Empire’s January issue hit stands today and whilst focusing on the upcoming The Book of Boba Fett, Kathleen Kennedy and other Star Wars creatives have spoken about other upcoming releases such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka. While most of the tidbits on the other series have been exciting, there is one piece of pretty disappointing news.

In December it was announced that The Mandalorian would be receiving three spin-off series, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic. Ahsoka, Rangers and Mando were set to one day overlap into a big event according to Kathleen Kennedy back in December, but since then Rangers’ development was put on hold following the firing of Gina Carano in the role of Cara Dune, who was rumoured to lead the series.

In the latest issue of Empire the outlet says, “Mando spin-off Rangers of the New Republic – due to centre on The Mandalorian’s Cara Dune, played by Gina Carano, who Lucasfilm later stated is not currently employed by them following controversial social media posts seems to be on hold, and likely absorbed into other series.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy follows up saying, “We’d never written any script or anything on that” when discussing Rangers and adds, “Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of the next season of The Mandalorian.

Kennedy doesn’t mention if the next season of Mando she is referring to is season three that’s already filming or in a future fourth season. Mando season three was initially slated to begin in December 2020 before being delayed into April or this year and again until September, which is when the series began filming. Rangers itself wasn’t expected to release until sometime in 2023/24 with Ahsoka always expected to arrive ahead of the series.
