According to a new report courtesy of MakingStarWars.net, Kevin Mckidd will be reprising the role of Fenn Rau, a character he voiced in seven episodes of the animated series, Star Wars: Rebels, in the third season of The Mandalorian, which is currently airing exclusively on Disney+. Mckidd appearing in The Mandalorian makes him one of the few actors in the Star Wars universe successfully making the jump from voicing a character in an animated project, to portraying its on live-action counterpart – something Katee Sackhoff has done to great results with the character of Bo-Katan Kryze.

Mckidd previously revealed on Twitter that he had ambitions of playing the live-action of the character in the third season of The Mandalorian in January last year, whilst The Mandalorian season three was in the midst of filming. Most Star Wars fans know Mckidd from his role in Rebels, but those unfamiliar may recognise the actor from Greys Anatomy and Trainspotting, or perhaps even for his voice work in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Brave and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.

It’s also worth mentioning that Promo Bricks are reporting that a Mandalorian LEGO set, based on the season three finale, will feature a Fang Fighter. This ship was seen in Star Wars: Rebels, and was used by the Mandalorian Protectors, of which Fenn Rau was the leader of. During Rebels, all the Protectors were killed by the Empire and Gar Saxxon, but Fenn Rau survived these events. Given the report from MSW and a Fang Fighter set to appear in The Mandalorian season three, it’s seems more than likely Fenn Rau will be making an appearance this season.

I anticipate some of my readers will not have seen Star Wars: Rebels so they’ll be unfamiliar with the character of Fenn Rau, so let me briefly fill you in. Rau, as I mentioned, is the last surviving member of the Mandalorian Protectors and joined the Rebel Alliance during Star Wars: Rebels, inspired by Sabine Wren (who will be played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo in Ahsoka), a fellow Mandalorian, and her loyalty to both the Rebels and her friends. Wren discovered the Darksaber, the legendary weapon that Din Djarin wields, and it was Rau that taught Sabine Wren of its origins and approved of Wren’s usage of the weapon to unite Mandalore. Rau later fought alongside Sabine Wren and Clan Wren, along with Bo-Katan Kryze to retake Mandalore which was being controlled by the Empire. After successfully taking down the Imperials on Mandalore, Sabine Wren gave the Darksaber, along with the leadership of Mandalore, to Bo-Katan, with Rau pledging his allegiance to Bo-Katan Kryze.

Given Fenn Rau’s connections to Mandalore, the Darksaber, and Bo-Katan, it almost feels like a no brainer for him to feature in the third season of The Mandalorian, which will see our heroes attempt to reclaim Mandalore later this season.
