In January of last year, Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Star Wars: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, announced they were developing multiple Star Wars video games, with one being a single player first person shooter. The news delighted fans as the studio has had much success with FPS titles in the past including the severely underrated Titanfall 2, along with the successful Battle Royale. Apex Legends, with many at the studio also having previously worked on the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2. There’s been little news on the upcoming title since the announcement last year, but now job listings may have giving us an exciting update.

According to recent job listings posted on LinkedIn, Respawn’s Seattle based studio, are looking to fill various positions including a cinematic lead, lead lighting artists, and a lead mission designer. Each listing features the same description, offering prospective hires an insight into the Star Wars FPS, “inspired by classic titles like Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, our story driven single-player game is being developed from the ground up leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5.”

Dark Forces and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 are considered classic Star Wars video games and loved by fans. Dark Forces released in 1995 and introduced the fan favourite character Kyle Katarn as the games lead. Dark Forces primarily focused on combat against creatures and enemies from the Star Wars universe along with environmental puzzles and hazards, and was often compared to the DOOM franchise. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 released in 1997 and saw improvements on its predecessor. introducing branching story paths, cutscenes with live action actors, along with lightsaber and force combat.

It’s also mentioned in the job listings that the untitled FPS will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, which isn’t much of a surprise considering Star Wars Jedi: Survivor along with Jedi: Fallen Order off of Unreal Engine 4. Respawn have always chosen to not use the Frostbite engine which was created by their parent company, EA, with Respawn previously using the Source engine on both Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends.

I’m sure Respawn’s project being inspired by the Dark Forces series will excite fans new and old. Given the fast paced nature of the DOOM franchise in which Dark Forces took inspiration from, it fits well with Respawn’s past work on Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends. Personally I can’t wait to learn more about this project, and I hope we get to see something from the game sooner rather than later, as this is easily one of my most anticipated video games.
