Taika Waititi, the director behind critically acclaimed films such What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for Wilderpeople and Jojo Rabbit, as well as commercial hits such as Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, has shared what people can expect from his long in-development Star Wars movie.
Before we continue with news of the day, I’d just like to share that you can support my work in two ways for which I’d be extremely grateful. Firstly it’s via my newly created Patreon page which has a two tier’s at this time – one to simply to support my work and a second which features ad-free articles. Secondly you can tip me with a simple one off payment on my Ko-Fi page or you can choose to support my work monthly on the platform. I’d truly appreciate it if you decided to support my work, but no pressure, I know things are pretty tough out here. Anyway, back to the reason you came here – the news!
During a brief interview with Variety during a premiere for his next film, Next Goal Wins, which is due to release on Friday and currently sports 46% on Rotten Tomatoes, the writer-director was asked about his upcoming untitled Star Wars film. When asked if his flick would stay true to what fans have come to know and love about Star Wars movies, Waititi responded, “it will be, dramatic pause, a Taika Waititi film.” Before adding that the film is going to, “piss people off” as he begins to laugh.

Unfortunately there’s no video of the interaction, but anybody that’s familiar with the writer-director and his personality knows that this was likely a joke on his part. However, as with anything Waititi says or does in recent times, I’m sure these comments are going to rub some fans up the wrong way. Since the release of Thor: Love and Thunder, the filmmaker has fallen out of favour with many online fans due to the divisive nature of the Marvel release. Many fans felt as if the film leaned too far into Taika territory, with the humour jacked up and becoming more silly than funny. However, despite its criticisms, Thor: Love and Thunder went on to become the second most successful Thor movie at the box office, raking in $760M, only behind Thor: Ragnarok at $865M, which Waititi also directed and was credited for turning the Thor franchise into a major success.

Waititi made headlines earlier this week when he revealed that he and Lucasfilm decided that he will complete four scripts for other films before moving onto his Star Wars movie. Waititi is currently listed as a writer on five upcoming feature films, Akira, Flash Gordon, The Last Family, We’re Wolves and The Incal. In addition, Waititi is set to direct two films, Tower of Terror and Klara and the Sun, the latter of which Waititi will begin shooting next year. Taika Waititi’s mysterious Star Wars movie was first announced in May 2020.
