On Monday, an anonymous Reddit user posted and deleted that Kogonda, the director behind films such as Columbus starring John Cho and Hayley Lu Richardson, and After Yang which stars Colin Farrell and The Acolyte, Jodie Turner Smith, would be directing an unspecified number of episodes of the Leslye Headland created series. Just one day later, Discussing Film are reporting that Kogonda will be directing on The Acolyte, and added that in addition to Kogonda, that Alex Garcia Lopez will also be helming an unknown number of episodes of the series.
Alex Garcia Lopez is probably best known for his television work, and has been a frequent collaborator of Netflix, directing episodes of their series including The Witcher, Cowboy Bebop, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Punisher, and Daredevil. Personally I haven’t been a fan of most of those series listed, outside of Daredevil and Punisher. It’s also worth mentioning that Kogonda is no stranger to TV series either, as last year he directed various episodes of the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series, Pachinko.
Kogonda and Alex Garcia Lopez join series creator, Leslye Headland, for directing on The Acolyte. Currently those three are the only known directors, but there could be more we don’t know about as of yet. As mentioned, Headland created the High Republic era series, but has a co-writer in Charmine DeGraté, who most recently worked on the HBO smash hit, House of the Dragon. The Acolyte is set to follow a former padawan and her Jedi master as they investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they encounter are more sinister than what they ever anticipated.
The Acolyte is currently in production and set to wrap filming within the next couple of months, with a planned release sometime in 2024. The series will stream exclusively on Disney+.
