Daisy Ridley led untitled Star Wars movie reported to begin filming on April 7th, 2024

As well all know, the next Star Wars movie to be released in theatres on May 22nd, 2026 is going to be the untitled Rey Skywalker movie being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Pre-SAG strike, there was reports from reliable insiders as to when the film would begin shooting, but since then, news on when production will begin has remained quiet. However, a new report points to start date in April once again.

Before we continue with news of the day, I’d just like to share that you can support my work in two ways for which I’d be extremely grateful. Firstly it’s via my newly created Patreon page which has a two tier’s at this time – one to simply to support my work and a second which features ad-free articles. Secondly you can tip me with a simple one off payment on my Ko-Fi page or you can choose to support my work monthly on the platform. I’d truly appreciate it if you decided to support my work, but no pressure, I know things are pretty tough out here. Anyway, back to the reason you came here – the news!

According to Production List, the untitled Rey Skywalker movie led by Daisy Ridley is looking to begin shooting on Sunday the 7th of April, 2024. The listing specifically mentions that the flick will begin shooting on that date and not just it marks the start of production. Personally, I don’t believe this date. Yes, the Daisy Ridley led movie is supposed to film next year at Pinewood Studios, London according to my sources, but specifically when I don’t know.

I’m not overly familiar with Production List, but I’ve come across it multiple times over the past year or so when I’ve been looking to keep up with projects I have an interest in that aren’t Star Wars related. I’ve found the listings to be hit and miss. On top of that, it’s very unusual that a Star Wars production would begin actually shooting on Sunday and the listing currently has Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Justin Brit Gibson (Into the Badlands) listed as the writers of the movie. Lindelof and Brit-Gibson worked on the title for close to two years before being removed from the project in February/March of this year and replaced by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders).

If the April start date feels familiar, it’s because it is. In the Summer, Jeff Sneider, who’s proven to be very reliable with his Star Wars information, shared that Lucasfilm were hoping to begin casting the Rey movie by September 4th of this year and that they were looking to begin filming in April 2024. These comments by Sneider were made pre-strike and he’s not given a note-worthy update since, but last month claimed that nobody knew as the industry itself was just getting back on its feet following the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

The films lead, Daisy Ridley, is currently filming an action movie titled Cleaner, in London and will then focus her efforts on the thriller, We Bury the Dead, which begins filming February in Australia. There is no word on what Ridley’s next production is after Dead. Ridley is attached to star in and executive produce two TV series, The Better Liar and The Christie Affair, with those two projects likely being priorities for Ridley as well as Star Wars, though neither series at the time of writing have a start date that I can find. Daisy Ridley did recently share that she believes that her untitled Rey Skywalker will be the next Star Wars movie to be released, which is May 22nd, 2026. Daisy Ridley can next be seen in Sometimes I Think About Dying, which is set to be released in January and currently boasts 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, her highest rated live-action project since 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

When there’s an update on the Ridley led Star Wars flick, I’ll be sure to update readers. And, we might not have too long of a wait according to the aforementioned Jeff Sneider, who shared on last weeks episode of his podcast, The Hot Mic, that he expects Star Wars movie news to be revealed this month, with his belief seemingly being on the Ridley led effort, with the insider and journalist leaning towards a casting update. You can read Sneider’s quote here.
