Damon Lindelof confirms he’s working on a Star Wars movie

It’s been around a year since Jeff Sneider reported via The Ankler, that the mind behind the critically acclaimed HBO series, The Leftovers and Watchmen was writing a Star Wars movie. Over the Summer and into the Fall, the various trades reported that Lindelof was currently working on a Star Wars flick alongside Justin Britt-Gibson (Into The Badlands) and found a director to helm the project in Ms. Marvel’s, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Since then there’s been rumours of the filming shooting this Summer and that the two leads of the film have already been cast. However, Lucasfilm, Disney or Lindelof have confirmed the projects existence, that is until now.

The Lost writer has been in attendance at SXSW where his new Peacock series, Ms. Davis – a series that see’s a nun using her faith to take on technology, premiered at the festival to positive reactions. When taking taking questions at the event to promote his new series, Slash Film asked the Lindelof what its like to be currently crafting a Star Wars movie, to which Lindelof responded:

“I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ’77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”

Lindelof’s comments echo that of which was mentioned in the trades last year, that Lucasfilm and Lindelof were taking their time with the project to make sure the project is done right. Lucasfilm reportedly want to be happy with the story before set to be told across a series of movies, and don’t want to be rushed. The Damon Lindelof project was reportedly convinced as a stand-alone project, set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but if the film is successful, it could lead to a series of films, mapped out by Lindelof and his rumoured writers room.

The Damon Lindelof project has reportedly been the film with the most momentum at Lucasfilm over the past year, and is favourite to take the release date of December 19th, 2025. Initially it was believed that a film from Jojo Rabbit director, Taika Waititi, would bow in 2025, with Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, revealing in May of last year that Waititi’s film would be next to release following an indefinite delay of Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which has now reportedly been shelved.

It’s believed that Lucasfilm will unveil its new Star Wars film slate at Star Wars Celebration Europe, which kicks off on April 7th. Damon Lindelof’s film is likely to be at the forefront of the slate announcement, with movies also currently being developed by the aforementioned Taika Waititi and Free Guy’s, Shawn Levy.
