Dave Filoni’s untitled Star Wars The Mandalorian crossover movie rumoured to release in 2028

In April 2023, Lucasfilm formally announced at Star Wars Celebration that Dave Filoni would be directing and writing a Star Wars movie that would act as a crossover event for the various live-action Disney+ series he’s had a hand in, which includes The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett.

Just a few months after the Celebration announcement, Disney and Lucasfilm dated three untitled Star Wars movies for release – May 22nd, 2026, December 19th, 2026 and December 17th, 2027. Given that Lucasfilm announced three movies at Star Wars Celebration, the Filoni film, a Rey Skywalker film and an origins of the Jedi movie, fans expected those films to take up those dates, though Lucasfilm never committed any of the announced films to those dates.

In a piece by The Hollywood Reporter from last year, the outlet shared that they believed the Filoni effort would release a year after the Rey film being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and that Filoni’s film was dependent on the production and release of a fourth season of The Mandalorian and a possible second season of Ahsoka. Things have changed since that time with questions hanging over the possibility of a fourth season of The Mandalorian as Lucasfilm announced a Mandalorian theatrical film just last week, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is due to enter production this year and that Filoni is still whittling away, writing the second season of Ahsoka.

If we’re going off the past tidbit from THR and apply what we think we know today, you’d assume that the Filoni film wouldn’t release until December 2027, given that it’s now rumoured that the Rey Skywalker film would take the December 2026 window. However, according to a reliable insider, that might not be in the case in actuality.

Jeff Sneider, who first exclusively broke that Dave Filoni was set to direct a Star Wars movie ahead of the Celebration announcement, has shared via his newsletter, that he believes Dave Filoni effort will not be taking the December 2027 release date, that said date would see the origins of the Jedi movie from James Mangold release, and that the Filoni crossover film might not release until 2028.

The possibility might surprise some readers, it definitely surprised me. I was personally hoping to see The Mandalorian and Grogu back-to-back with the Filoni movie, with the former taking the May 2026 window and the latter taking December 2026. It seemed like wishful thinking given that Filoni has to work on The Mandalorian and Grogu, along with a second season of Ahsoka, before he gets to direct his theatrical effort, but even then I expected the film in December 2027 at the latest.

At the moment, it seems as if Star Wars films are releasing in the December of a year an Avatar film isn’t releasing, with the next Avatar movies slated to release in December 2025, December 2029, and December 2031. Given that 2028 won’t see a release of an Avatar movie, it would make sense to see a Star Wars movie, possibly Filoni’s, helm a December 2028 release window.
