Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu just had its first section shown to fans and critics behind closed doors over a month before the film releases. We’ll be giving you a description of all the footage.
During Disney’s CinemaCon presentation, Jon Favreau walked out on stage and debuted a brand new trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, revealed that tickets go on sale on April 20th and that over forty minutes of footage with have expanded aspect ratio for premium theatre formats. This of course was all exciting news and news that was available to the general public.
However, those in attendance at CinemaCon got treated to more than just a trailer…they saw a whopping seventeen minutes of footage from the movie.
Footage Description
According to those in attendance, The Mandalorian and Grogu does not open with a crawl, instead it has a few slides that catch the audience up with Din Djarin and Grogu, that Din is now working for the New Republic and that his current targets are high ranking Imperial officers.
Once the text disappears, we’re dropped onto a snowy planet (Hoth?) and see a group of high ranking Imperials meeting inside of an old bunker. Din Djarin is then seen infiltrating this base and taking out a plethora of Stormtroopers as he seeks to reach an Imperial benefactor that was been helping protect the aforementioned Imperial warlords. Din and Grogu chase down the benefactor, who is now attempting to escape on a scout walker whilst inside of an AT-AT.

Following the events that took place on the snow planet, it’s shown that Din works for a New Republic, Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver). Ward has been sending Din and Grogu on these missions to hunt down the Imperials, but he doesn’t just do it solo, he also has help from the fan-favourite Star Wars: Rebels character, Zeb Orrelios.
Colonel Ward presents Din Djarin with his latest mission, to obtain the location and indentity of one of the Empire’s key leaders. However to obtain this information, Din has to get the information from the Hutt’s located on Nal Hutta. The two Hutts have struck a deal with the New Republic to share the intel on the Imperial leaders, but in exchange, they need the New Republic rescue one of their own, Rotta the Hutt, who is, according to the Hutts, being held captive by a rival crime syndicate.
Din Djarin is reluctant at first to take on the mission from Ward pleas that it is critical to stopping the Empire from coming back to power and offers up something near and dear to Din’s heart, his old ship, the Razor Crest which has been fixed following its destruction in the second season of The Mandalorian.
Looking Ahead
With tickets going on sale this Friday, we’d like to remind you that last week Box Office Theory reported current projections for The Mandalorian and Grogu weren’t looking as hot as past Star Wars releases.
The outlet had the feature film projected for a $71-85M opening weekend in North America, a ball park which could see The Mandalorian and Grogu opening lower than Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, which opened to $84M domestically. We stated at the time that those projections should be taken lightly for now and more accurate projections would arrive once tickets went on sale and in the weeks that follow.
