During the Lucasfilm Studio Showcase at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy brought out Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni to discuss the third season of The Mandalorian. They showed audiences in the room a handful of minutes from Season 3 Episode 7, which saw Ella Kane in the underbelly of Coruscant, equipped with Blade Runner-esq visuals, down to the Deckard trench, meet with an Imperial Probe Droid which launched a hologram of Moff Gideon. Gideon and Kane conversed, with Kane revealing that Gideon’s plan to use to the pirates to attack Nevarro had failed due to a rescue mission led by Bo Katan Kryze. Gideon frustrated with matters decided to take things into his own hands. The Moff meets with the Shadow Council, a group of other high ranking Imperials, who take orders from Grand Admiral Thrawn. Gideon has requested the assistance of three Praetorian Guards and multiple TIE bombers to launch an attack on the Mandalorian’s. It’s also revealed within these scenes that the Imperials are working on a cloning project named Necromancer, but that Gideon previously launched his own cloning project without their blessing on Nevarro.
Shortly after The Mandalorian footage, Kennedy played a short clip of Skeleton Crew creators, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, who apologised for not being at the event as they’re too busy with post-production on the series and that they sent a friend in their absence. One of the leads of the series, Jude Law, took to the stage to the joy of the crowd before bringing out the child actors he worked with in the series – Ravi Cabot Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith. The kids revealed that they were all introduced to Star Wars by their fathers, as the panelists jokes that fathers showing their kids Star Wars is what keeps them in business.
The crew on stage talked a little about how the series was conceived, with Jon Favreau stating that Jon Watts pitched him a loose version of Skeleton Crew before the launch of Disney+, and that Watts had also spoke with Kathleen Kennedy due to her experience with eighties Amblin films, something they wanted to evoke in the series, which Kennedy was happy to help with. Filoni added that the series focuses on a group of children who are seeking adventure, and go off on one without their parents knowledge. As they were getting ready to sign off, Favreau teased footage to be shown for those in attendance, before a teaser trailer was played.
The trailer begins with a group of school kids seemingly bored with life, looking longingly in their class room and seeking adventure. As the trailer progresses we hear voiceovers from the various lead group discussing going on an adventure as shots of them taking a speeder bike through a forest. They take their speeder bikes at the dead of night and venture out into the unknown full of glee. The next morning, the kids parents realise they’ve gone missing and the trailer intercuts the parents trying to find their children, with holograms asking them to return home. We see the children take a ship and whip around the galaxy, encountering various foes including pirates which includes Vane from The Mandalorian, and droids. They kids seemingly end up in a prison of some sort, where they meet Jude Law, who uses the force to unlock them from their cell.
