Following last weeks D23 Expo, Disney has updated their official release schedule and has finally removed Star Wars: Rogue Squadron which was reportedly indefinitely delayed internally ten months ago due to scheduling conflicts with director Patty Jenkins.
Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was announced back in December 2020 at Disney’s Investors Day with a release date of December 22nd, 2023 with the film set to follow a new generation of Rebel pilots as they aspire to be the fiercest pilots in the galaxy, but less than a year later it was widely reported that the film had suffered an indefinite delay due to scheduling conflicts arising for the director Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman 1984) with rumours pointing towards development for the third instalment in Jenkins’ Wonder Woman franchise moving up, supposedly for a 2024 release. Disney have kept the Rogue Squadron movie firmly placed on it’s initial release date, even when Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the next film would come from Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi.
The next Star Wars film, supposedly the one coming from Waititi, is currently still dated for a December 2025 release, with an untitled Star Wars film, one believed to be produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige, listed for December 2027. Waititi currently has his hands full with directing duties on Apple TV+’s Time Bandits and acting duties on the second season of HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, with both projects taking up the rest of the year. It’s previously been reported that Waititi’s film will begin shooting early next year, but that remains to be seen, especially when the director has claimed he’s still writing the script and hasn’t turned in a draft.
