Halloween’s David Gordon Green was reportedly developing a Star Wars movie

According to journalist and insider, Jeff Sneider, via The Hot Mic podcast, director of Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, David Gordon Green, was reportedly developing a Star Wars movie. Green was supposedly trying to get a Star Wars movie off the ground before the release of his second Halloween movie, Halloween Kills, which released in the Fall of 2021, and was received poorly by critics and audiences alike, touting a lousy 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. Sneider said the following:

“I’m told that before Halloween Kills came out, David Gordon Green, was trying to get a Star Wars movie off the ground. I’m told that David Gordon Green, this is speculative, I’ve heard that he regrets signing on to do an Exorcist trilogy straight after a Halloween trilogy, to do six franchise horror movies, for a guy who is by the way…David Gordon Green, who’s hopped around from Snow Angels to George Washington – you can’t pin him down with a genre. Don’t know if he’s loved getting caught up in this horror cycle for the last decade. Would it shock me if David Gordon Green didn’t direct two and three of The Exorcist sequels? It wouldn’t shock me. I’ve heard that the script for number two has already been turned in, and they’ve wrapped production on the first one. I would be personally surprised if David did two and three. And I don’t think his Star Wars movie is happening, that felt like a non-starter particularly given how poorly those Halloween sequels seemed to go over.” – Jeff Sneider

Though I can’t say I’m unhappy to see that David Gordon Green won’t be developing a Star Wars movie, I do think he was an interesting choice and quite a versatile writer and director. I’m a fan of his first Halloween film, but did not enjoy its follow ups. However, I did enjoy his work on various comedies such as Eastbound and Down, Pineapple Express, Dickinson and Mythic Quest, as well as his dramas including All the Real Girls, Snow Angels and George Washington.

Gordon is currently developing three sequels to The Exorcist for Universal, with the first slated to release this year. Lucasfilm are currently gearing up to release a Star Wars film in December 2025, which will be written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) and directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel). In addition to the Knight/Obaid-Chinoy film, Star Wars movies from Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Love and Thunder) are in development.
