Star Wars fans would’ve had to wait seven years for a new theatrical film release when The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in cinema’s next year. However, fans seemingly won’t have to wait long for another theatrical release as development on Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars movie continues and looks to start shooing later this year.
News on Levy’s Star Wars movie has been pretty quiet since reports that Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star broke a couple of months ago. The flick seems to be casting up or at the very least getting ready to.
Rumours in recent weeks have suggested both Jesse Plemons and Jodie Comer had been cast in Levy’s Star Wars project, but a very reliable journalist and insider has revealed that it is not the case, though both stars are in consideration for roles.
Has Jesse Plemons and Jodie Comer been cast in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie?

Yesterday during The Hot Mic podcast with John Rocha and Jeff Sneider, the latter shared what he had heard regarding aforementioned rumours of the Plemons and Comer casting. The reliable Sneider shared that “neither have been cast” in the role they were circling, but they’re “both on a list” for the said roles, but added that it wouldn’t be them necessarily that would land the roles.
When speaking about Comer, Sneider seemed to poor some cold water on the possible casting due to Comer portrayal of Rey Skywalker’s mother in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, despite Shawn Levy’s fondness for the actress.
However, Sneider was more positive when it came to the possible casting of Jesse Plemons as the films main antagonist. Sneider shared that the Plemons casting is more believable and that it was “just the matter if he wants to do it.” You can read Sneider’s full quote on the matter below.
“Neither have been cast. They are both on a list, I can say that right now. I’ve done reporting, they’re both on the list, but it’s not them necessarily. But again with offers it’s like, ‘the offer hasn’t been sent yet’, but you know the offers getting sent on like Friday. Some of it is just semantics.
With the Jodie Comer stuff, she was in The Force Awakens [The Rise of Skywalker]. I know Levy really likes her, obviously with Free Guy and everything, but I don’t know if he’ll get his way on that because she already played Rey’s mom. Plemons seems a little bit more believable, it’s the just the matter if he wants to do it. I feel like there’s an offer out to somebody else, but I don’t know if it’s going to work out and not necessarily for that role. But clearly it’s casting up. Levy’s movie is going to go and Plemons verses Gosling would be cool.” – Jeff Sneider via The Hot Mic on April 10th, 2025
Who is Jesse Plemons?
Jesse Plemons is an American actor who’s probably best known for his TV work, starring in hit series including Breaking Bad and Friday Night Lights along with having one of the most memorable episodes of Black Mirror, The USS Calister. He’s also starred in notable movies such as Vice, The Power of the Dog, Judas and the Black Messiah, Jungle Cruise and Game Night which is probably the movie role he’s most known for.
In recent years Plemmons has starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, alongside Emma Stone in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness and in Alex Garland’s Civil War in a very memorable role. He can next be seen in Bugonia, another collaboration with Lanthimo’s and Stone.
In my opinion Plemons is one of the most exciting actors working today and if he landed the main villain role in a Star Wars movie, it would be a casting choice that would excite me. Especially as he’d act opposite my favourite actor of the past fifteen years, Ryan Gosling.
Who is Jodie Comer?
Star Wars fans probably best know the British actress Jodie Comer as Rey Skywalker’s mother, Miramir, from The Rise of Skywalker, though she’s undoubtedly best known for starring in the BBC series, Killing Eve.
On the big screen Comer is probably best known for starring alongside Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy, a movie directed by Shawn Levy. Since then Comer has gone on to star in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, Jeff Nichols’ The Bikeriders and can next be seen in the highly anticipated 28 Years Later from Danny Boyle.
Personally I’m not excited by the possibility of Jodie Comer’s casting, not because she’s not talented – she most certainly is, but there’s likely many of actress of her calibre that could fill the role. She’s already landed a role in Star Wars where she looks just like herself and she’d instantly recognisable to Star Wars fans, even if her screen time in The Rise of Skywalker was brief to say the least and general audiences will likely not recall her appearing in that flick.
When will Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie begin filming?
It was previously reported by Jeff Sneider that Levy was keeping a window open to shoot his Star Wars effort for September this year which points to a Fall shoot.
Since that report from Sneider, there has not been any updates around the production of the movie, though with the movie casting up, it likely indicates that development is going well and a shoot for later in the year is expected.
When will Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie release?
The next Star Wars movie due to release is The Mandalorian and Grogu in May of next year, it’s the only Star Wars movie confirmed to release at the moment. That being said, there is an untitled Star Wars movie dated for release in December 2027 which is when we believe the Levy movie will release as it’s the next to enter production.
I have no real evidence to support this theory of mine and I have not been told it by sources, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this movie release in May of 2027 instead of December. Why I think this is simply due to the fiftieth anniversary of Star Wars: A New Hope and what better time to release a new Star Wars movie. Of course Lucasfilm could simply re-release A New Hope in theatres, and I expect them to do so.
However, the writer of the Levy movie, Johnathan Tropper, recently shared that the movie could arrive “sooner than you think.” Well, most Star Wars fans think this flick is hitting cinemas in December, John…so could my theory be correct? I hope so.
