Jon Favreau has just revealed that he wrote The Mandalorian Season 4 to set up Ahsoka Season 2. We’re just one month away from the reason of The Mandalorian and Grogu and the film’s director and writer is busy giving interviews which are dropping some information about Season 4 and more.
Last week, we reported on how Jon Favreau said in an interview that there were always conversations about potentially bringing characters such as Din Djarin and Grogu into theatres. However, he had already written The Mandalorian Season 4 and did not expect the next step to just be move straight into a theatrical release. Due to the film industry strikes, he was asked if he’d like to make a Mandalorian and Grogu film and that’s when a fourth season was thrown away.
Switching To Film Cut Ahsoka Plans
Now we finally have some details on what exactly The Mandalorian Season 4 would have been if things had gone down differently. In latest issue of SFX magazine (spotted by GamesRadar), the director and writer of the upcoming movie was interviewed and asked about the process of pivoting from a streaming series in The Mandalorian Season 4 to a blockbuster film in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Favreau explains that “You can’t just take those scripts and turn them into a movie.” That is something some fans have speculated has happened. Something to keep in mind is that the late Carl Weathers would likely have had a big part in Season 4 as he did in Season 3. The actor passed over a year after Jon Favreau had written scripts for Mando’s fourth season and film writing was well-underway.
The director and writer goes onto say that with a Disney+ show and feature film being a different medium, he needed to “start from scratch, essentially” as “there were certain things I wanted to pursue.” One of those things was Grogu being the Mandalorian’s apprentice which we’ll see in this film.
Season 4 Was Thrawn

Furthermore, Favreau teased The Mandalorian Season 4 would feature big connections to this year’s Ahsoka Season 2. “There were a lot of characters, it assumed you’d watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline” he told SFX mag.
“As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you’ll know these characters well, even if you’ve never seen the show. But there’s still a lot of Star Wars in there. You’re going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn’t diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film.”

So there will be some connection to the upcoming second season of Ahsoka in the new movie. Favreau said himself there are “clues” in another interview. It just won’t be as big as it was originally going to be in Season 4.
The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theatres and IMAX screens worldwide on May 22nd.
