Jon Watts in talks to direct mystery Star Wars High Republic TV series

Just a couple of weeks after it was revealed that a mysterious Star Wars project, codenamed Grammar Rodeo, was set to film in June, today DiscussingFilm have exclusively reported that Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts is in talks to direct at least one episode of the unannounced series.

Previously it was reported by ProductionWeekly that a mysterious unannounced series called Grammar Rodeo was set to film in June. Later I backed up the story and revealed that the series would film until December at Manhattan Beach Studios, and that it would not be set during The Mandalorian timeline. Cinelinx revealed that they heard the series is set in the High Republic and has it described to them as, “Stranger Things in Space” and shortly after The Illuminerdi and Murphy’s Multiverse both revealed that the series was looking to cast multiple actors aged between 10-12.

Jon Watts is best known for his work on the MCU Spider-Man trilogy, which includes, Homecoming, Far From Home, and the juggernaut that is No Way Home, which recently crossed $1.8B at the worldwide box office. Watts is also on board to direct the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the Fantastic Four which currently does not have a release date, along with producing a sixth entry in the Final Destination series and is set to direct George Clooney and Brad Pitt in an untitled thriller for Apple TV+.

DiscussingFilm also mention that Jon Favreau will executive produce the series, which is a surprise given that Favreau’s name has previously not been attached to any Star Wars television projects outside of those in the MandoVerse such as Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi or The Acolyte.

Personally I find this news very exciting as Watts’ Spider-Man trilogy was heavily influenced by John Hughes movies, and his experience working with a younger cast, this is why to me he feels like the perfect candidate to take on a series following a group of young Jedi during the high republic period.

Lucasfilm have yet to formally announce the series, but stay tuned to Bespin Bulletin for future updates, but if you never want to miss a post then consider signing up to our mailing list below, and if you enjoy and want to support me work then you can tip me on Ko-Fi here.
