Earlier today Kathleen Kennedy spoke with Deadline about a variety of topics, including her possibly stepping down and somebody succeeding her as Lucasfilm president, I already covered her comments on the topic here if you want to read about that. However, Kennedy also spoke about some Star Wars projects that are in the works at Lucasfilm with one of them being a new standalone movie from Deadpool & Wolverine director, Shawn Levy.
In November 2022, it was widely reported that Shawn Levy, director of films such as Night at the Museum, Free Guy, The Adam Project, and most recently Deadpool & Wolverine, was working on an untitled Star Wars movie, news both Levy and Lucasfilm would later confirm. News on the project was fairly quiet up until the past year when it was reported that Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker might be making an appearance in the flick, that The Adam Project writer, Jonathan Trooper, was writing Levy’s flick, and more recently that Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049) was in talks to star and that the film was looking to shoot this Fall.

With the news that Levy’s film was looking to shoot in the Fall, it meant that it was likely the next movie to release after The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is set to release on May 22nd, 2026. Currently there’s an untitled Star Wars movie dated for December 17th, 2027, which is likely when we’ll get to see the Levy effort. During an interview with Deadline today, Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that the next Star Wars film to enter production and release following The Mandalorian and Grogu would be Levy’s effort, which would be standalone flick and be set five or six years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and that fans may get to see some characters from the sequel trilogy appear.
“Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out. […] and with this, it’s pretty much new characters. We may bring some characters back from the sequel saga, but pretty much new characters.” – Kathleen Kennedy
