Kathleen Kennedy reaffirms that Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is still being developed; Reveals Waititi is writing it by himself

Lucasfilm kicked off Star Wars Celebration 2023 with a bang thanks to their Lucasfilm Studio Showcase, which provided fans with multiple trailers for Star Wars television series releasing within the next eighteen months, along with a new slate of movies. Despite the excitement for the new movies announced, fans couldn’t help but notice that one of the most high profile movie projects announced in recent years, a film from Thor: Ragnarok director, Taika Waititi, was missing from the slate, but Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, when speaking to Variety, confirmed that Taika’s project is still very much in development. She told the outlet:

“Taika is still working away. He’s writing the script himself and he really doesn’t want to bring others into the process, and I don’t blame him. He has a very, very unique voice. So I want to protect that and that’s what he’s doing, but we’re going to make that one day.”

The news that Waititi is writing his untitled Star Wars project definitely comes as a surprise, as it was announced in 2020 that he was developing the script alongside 1917 scribe, Krysty Wilson-Cairns, with Wilson-Cairns just this Fall reiterating that she was still working on the script with Waititi. If Wilson-Cairns has departed the project, and Waititi is handling a re-write of the project himself, it could definitely explain why and how this project is taking so long to come to fruition. Waititi and Wilson-Cairns worked on the script together for over two years that we know, and now Waititi, at least for now, is penning it by himself.

Kennedy also opened up to Variety regarding Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy, telling the outlet that she and Johnson still want to tell that story, but it’s Johnson’s busy schedule that’s currently stopping the project from developing. Kennedy said that she speaks with Rian often and that he’s really excited to delve back into a galaxy far, far away, but that it requires a really big commitment of time, which Johnson doesn’t have in the near future.
