Loki director rumoured to be directing Star Wars: The Acolyte

Yesterday I posted an exclusive report revealing that I’d heard from sources that the upcoming Star Wars television series, The Acolyte, is currently deep into pre-production at Shinfield Studios, Reading with plans to shoot the series at the location later in year, with rumours indicating said shoot will begin in October. Within my report I teased that I’d heard whispers of who the director, or perhaps a director, of the series is, and shortly after the name I had heard was revealed in a separate report.

The report I’m referring to came courtesy of MakingStarWars, who emphasises this is simply a rumour they’ve heard, but that the director attached or at least approached is none other than the director of the first season of Loki, Kate Herron.

Herron has primarily worked in the television space and directed the entire first season of Marvel Studios’ Loki which garnered critical acclaim and saw a positive response from fans. Herron also directed four episodes of the hit Netflix series Sex Education which stars Gillian Anderson, Emma Mackey and Ncuti Gatwa. I’ve seen both of the those shows and really enjoyed the two of them, and Herron’s directorial work on them, so having her name attached to The Acolyte is truly an exciting development.

The second season of Loki is currently filming in London, but Herron is not returning to directing duties on the series, that privilege falls to director-duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Synchronic, The Endless). Currently it’s not known what Herron’s next project is, and it may just be a coincidence that the director didn’t return for the second season of Loki which has started filming whilst The Acolyte is deep into pre-production and targeting an October start date.

Currently little is known about The Acolyte. We know that the series was created by Leslye Headland, who created the critically acclaimed Russian Doll for Netflix, and she’ll also be the showrunner of the series, and we know that the series focuses on the emergence of the darkside in the final days of the High Republic era. It’s rumoured that Amandla Stenberg (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies) has been cast as the lead of the series, but no more there actors have been attached, nor have additional writers or directors, but with production ramping up and the start of principal photography inching ever closer, I’m sure we’ll hear more on the series soon.
