D23 Expo is underway and one of the biggest announcements from the Lucasfilm segment of the Disney Entertainment Showcase was that the next Star Wars theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is officially filming.
Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian and director of The Mandalorian and Grogu alongside Dave Filoni, an executive producer of the series and film, confirmed that filming has begun on the feature and that they’re proud and excited to be bringing Star Wars back to the big screen.
Alongside the announcement of filming, Favreau and Filoni treated D23 attendees – the clip was not shared officially online.

The teaser starts by showing moments of Din Djarin and Din Grogu from the first three seasons of The Mandalorian series. As a past shot of Grogu’s pod closes into darkness, new footage kicks off. Din Djarin walks into a room and fires his blaster at some Imperial Snow Troopers as those in charge look shocked and scared. We see what appears to be the Razor Crest fly by in space before we see Din and Grogu speaking with Zeb (from Star Wars: Rebels) who wishes our duo good luck.
We cut to an armoury full of Snowtroopers with red lighting with Din Djarin separately walking down a dimly lit corridor and Grogu crawling through a shaft. Snowtroopers run down a dark hallway that has snow on the ground and a mouse droid speeds through a doorway. The coolest shot is from the POV of the mouse droid which races down a corridor towards Din who’s blasting and kicking Snowtroopers.
We then see a snowy planet as Din and Grogu race down a side of a mountain in an AT-RT featuring shots of Grogu’s ears being blown back. The duo onboard the AT-RT come face-to-face with two AT-AT’s that begin firing down at our heroes and the screen cuts to black and a new The Mandalorian and Grogu logo appears. One final shot after the title card is of Grogu inside a very small cockpit with two Anzellan’s, likely the ones from The Mandalorian season three, however Grogu appears to tower over them.
Towards the tail end of last month, it was reported by MakingStarWars that the Jon Favreau directed movie was due to start principal photography within around three weeks and that some time sensitive scenes had already been filmed. Earlier today I mentioned on the Star Wars Santa Show that I’d heard that the flick was shooting, but didn’t want to run a report as I’d only heard it from a singular source, though I was told it’s been in principal photography for over a week.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is leading Star Wars’ return to theatres on May 22nd, 2026 with Lucasfilm readying a slate of theatrical releases which include New Jedi Order (working title) from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), Dawn of the Jedi (working title) from James Mangold (Logan), an untitled flick from Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and a MandoVerse crossover event film from Dave Filoni (Ahsoka).
