Lucasfilm confirm Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie will release before Rogue Squadron and Kevin Feige’s project

During the Vanity Fair Star Wars article, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided an update on the upcoming slate of Star Wars films, something’s fans have been wondering about since the apparent delay of Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.

“We have a roadmap” claims Kennedy, before it’s added that the previously announced untitled film from Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) and Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho) will be the first of the three films announced to be released. Initially Rogue Squadron from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was set to release in December of next year, but the article confirms the project is now further off than previously announced. It was believed that Waititi’s film would release in December 2025, and its likely still the case, but the article provided no clarification.

The third untitled Star Wars film Lucasfilm slated which is set to arrive in December 2027, is a project produced by Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige which made the rounds last week when writer of THR project, Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) had begun writing the series, causing many fans to speculate if the film was arriving first despite Waititi working on his project since 2020. Kennedy adds that Feige’s project is in the very early stages when adding, “I would love to see what movie he might come up with, but right now, no, there isn’t anything specifically.”

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was announced for a December 2023 release, and is still currently on Disney’s release schedule which updated at the tail end of April, but Kennedy’s comments should finally squash any hope that the project will arrive on its initially announced date. Jenkins was set to film Rogue Squadron sometime this year, but late last year it was reported that due to scheduling conflicts, Jenkins would not be able to deliver Squadron on time. It’s been reported that the upset was caused by Warner Bros pushing up the release of their third Wonder Woman film which will film sometime next year for a 2024 release.
