Over the past few weeks, One Take News have been revealing a growing list of directors for the upcoming Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew. In addition to the series co-creator, Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home), it’s been reported that The Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and David Lowery (The Green Knight), have both directed episodes of the upcoming live-action Star Wars series. Now, One Take News are reporting that Jake Schrier, the man slated to direct Marvel Studios The Thunderbolts, has helmed an episode of the series.

Unlike The Daniels, David Lowery, and Jon Watts, Schrier’s name is probably far less recognisable and I assume many readers will be unfamiliar with his work. Most of Schrier’s past work is television based, working on the Little Dicky led Dave (praying for a Dicky cameo in Skelton Crew), Jim Carrey’s Kidding, BJ Novack’s The Premise, and Minx, which stars Jake Johnson. In addition to his TV work, Schrier has also directed a bevy of music videos for high profile artists such as Kanye West (Follow God), Kendrick Lamar (We Cry Together), Halsey (Eastside), Haim (Want You Back) and Selena Gomez (I Can’t Get Enough). As mentioned, Schrier is set to helm The Thunderbolts for Marvel Studios, but has had experience directing a couple of movies in past including Paper Towns starring Cara Delevinge and Robot & Frank which starred James Marsden and Jeremy Strong.

Personally I’m familiar with all the music videos mentioned, as well as Kidding, Dave, and The Premise, and personally I’m very pleased with his work as a director, with his episode of The Premise being a highlight, and I’m more than happy to see him board Skeleton Crew, joining a handful of very successful and talented directors. Schrier’s latest project, the Steven Yuen led Netflix series Beef, is slated to release tomorrow and currently boasts 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, so if you’re curious about his work, then perhaps check out that release over the weekend.

As we learn more about Skeleton Crew, and see such talented directors attached to the series, my excitement continues to grow for this Star Wars project. Skeleton Crew stars Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore) as a teacher, with the story focusing on a group of children lost in the galaxy trying to find their way back home. The series is inspired by eighties Amblin movies such as The Goonies, and is set during the same time period as The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, with creators of those series, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni on board Skeleton Crew as executive producers. Skeleton Crewis slated to release exclusively on Disney+ later this year and you can see the trailer for Schrier’s latest directorial effort, Beef, below.
