Following the action packed Star Wars Galactic Racer gameplay trailer at last week’s State of Play, the team behind the game has pulled back the curtain on what fans can expect when they get behind the controls later this year.
In an in-depth new interview with IGN, Fuse Games’ CEO and founder Matt Webster along with the game’s creative director Kieran Crimmins gave us even more information about the game this week. Whilst their comments on a lack of post launch content has not gone down well with fans, we’ll be taking a look at the exciting gameplay info they have shared.
Boost System
One of the key design pillars for this game is to do things different. Fuse Games did not want to simply make a racing game with a Star Wars skin. Innovation had to take place whilst also taking inspiration from previous Star Wars media.
The game features a mechanical boost system. It is not just a press X/A to boost. It is a tactical boost with two stages. The second stage is called “ramjet.” His will make your vehicle go ultra fast at the cost of generating heat. If you use it for too long, you will explode into thousands of pieces.
The system does not stop there. The environment also affects how it behaves and they gave an example. One of the locations in the game is Lantaana: tropical rainforest and volcano island planet. Parts of the track has lava rivers that will quickly get the ramjet up to operating temperature but can overheat it quicker. Meanwhile rivers of water will keep the ramjet running for longer. The skill will be in the driver making decisions on where to deploy it.

Playable Cutscenes
Another aspect of the game revealed through this interview are playable spaces outside of the race track: the Paddock. Fuse Games say they did not want to make a cutscene space but rather somewhere you can walk around and interact with the world.
The Paddock will let you walk out from your own starship, hold conversations with NPCs, upgrade and examine your vehicles. This space is viewed as a decompression segment of the game. You can create your own path and immerse yourself within the world of Star Wars here.
Speaking of interacting with characters, will there be plenty of familiar faces showing up? We already know Ben Quadinaros and Sebulba are confirmed for the game but Fuse Games tease there will be more.
“There’s going to be a good mix of familiar faces and new characters. We want to get that mix right, so no matter what kind of Star Wars media you’ve engaged with, whether it be a movie or game, there’s a bunch of familiarity in there when it comes to the space. Otherwise it wouldn’t feel like an authentic Star Wars experience.” – Kieran Crimmins
