New Star Wars: The Acolyte TV spot reveals new footage and adds credit to popular twin theory

As we inch ever closer to the release of The Acolyte on June 4th, new TV spots and clips are dropping every week. Today, a new TV spot released shared some exciting new footage and adds fuel to a very popular theory.

The latest TV spot uses much of the same footage we’ve seen in previous trailers and TV spots. Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett) can be heard saying that somebody is killing Jedi and that it doesn’t make sense. Sol (Lee Jung-Jae) repeats lines we’ve heard before, “She was my student. I trained her” before Fandar responds with a pretty cheesy quip, “Now she’s a student of the darkside. An Acolyte.” ~ insert Peter Griffin he said the title meme here ~

Following the “Acolyte” line from Fandar, we see the shot of Mae (Amandla Stenberg) approaching a mysterious character on some rocks – we don’t see the characters face as Mae approaches from behind. This is a shot we have been seeing for months, but this time it’s expanded, as the mysterious character now ignites a red lightsaber. Pointing towards the character on the rocks being the masked Sith we take on the Jedi in a forest location as seen in the last trailer.

We’ve seen shots in the past of Sol and other Jedi on a snowy location, but we never had much context as to why they’re there. Sure the Jedi are there as part of their investigation, but the new spot shows that they’re chasing Amandla Stenberg’s Mae. We see Mae running throw a snowy before she’s cornered by the Jedi on a ledge. Mae proclaims that she didn’t do it, that she didn’t kill the Jedi, asking the Jedi to believe her. Before we see Yord Fandar coming face-to-face with the red lightsaber wielding Sith from the previous trailer at the forest location.

We know Amandla Stenberg is playing a character named Mae, but now that it appears that she’s playing two adult characters, seemingly twins. We don’t know if Mae is the good twin we see pleading with the Jedi in the latest spot, or if Mae is the Sith Acolyte murdering Jedi. Both characters are sporting similar hairstyles, but it’s their outfits that are setting them apart. The Evil Mae sports a purple robe and dark clothing beneath it, whereas Good Mae sports more of a combat vest which is lighter in colour. The spot also confirms to us that Good Mae is the character that is paired with the new droid for the series, Pip.

There’s been rumours in the past that Stenberg was playing twins. I theorised in the past that perhaps one of the twins, the one that was due to become Sol’s padawan, had perished and that Mae was seeking revenge against the Jedi for the loss of her sister. However that seems to not be the case and that both twins make it to adulthood, so the motivation at this point as to why Evil Mae has joined the Sith and is hunting Jedi.

Set during the High Republic era, The Acolyte, will follow an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

The Acolyte stars Amandla Stenberg (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies) as the lead, as well as Lee Jung Jae (Squid Game), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Jodie Turner-Smith (After Yang) Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Dean Charles Chapman (1917), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Margarita Levieva (Daredevil: Born Again).

The Acolyte premieres on Disney+ on June 4th with TWO episodes.
