Respawn announce they’re working on THREE Star Wars video games

Respawn Entertainment along with Lucasfilm Games, and Electronic Arts have officially announced that Respawn are working on not one, not two, but THREE brand new Star Wars video games.

Respawn Entertainment are no stranger to the Star Wars universe, previously releasing the critically acclaimed and commercially successful, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Today they confirmed that one of the titles they’re currently developing is a sequel to Fallen Order, and refer to the sequel as part of the Star Wars Jedi franchise. You may recall that I previously stated in January 2020, and again earlier this month, that the Fallen Order sequel would use the name, Star Wars Jedi, and would adopt a new subtitle, and would not be titled Fallen Order 2.

Respawn announced that a new team has just started work on a first person shooter set in the Star Wars universe, which is being directed by Peter Hirschmann. Hirschmann has previously worked on multiple Star Wars games including The Force Unleashed, Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, Empire at War, the original Battlefront II, as well as multiple LEGO Star Wars titles. Respawn are veterans of the first person shooter, with many members of Respawn previously working on the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare franchise, before releasing the critically acclaimed Titanfall 2, and the hugely successful, Apex Legends.

Lastly, the third title in development is a strategy game. Respawn are producing the strategy game, but development is being led by the newly formed studio, Bit Reactor, which contains veterans of the XCOM games, with Greg Foerstch at the helm.

The first person shooter, and the strategy title, are likely many years away, as both only very recently started development. The Fallen Order sequel started development immediately after completion of the first game, and current rumours indicate that the title could officially be revealed at Star Wars Celebration (if it goes ahead), and is targeting a late 2022 release.

Elsewhere Jeff Grubb of GamesBeat clarified that the team working on the untitled first person shooter, is the team that developed last years VR title, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond, and that the initial idea was for them to work on a VR Star Wars FPS, but ultimately that changed. Grubb also mentions that plans for a third entry in EA’s Battlefront series is “dead”. This isn’t new information as we’ve know for quite sometime that DICE were already plotting a follow-up to last years troublesome, Battlefield 2042, and had no plans to work on a third Battlefront.

The future is looking bright for Star Wars video games. Currently we know of three games being developed by Respawn, an open-world title being developed at Ubisoft by Massive, Knights of the Old Republic Remake from Aspyr, Star Wars: Eclipse (which I’m hoping gets cancelled), and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which will release in just over two months time.
