Rick Famuyiwa directed the first and last episode of The Mandalorian season 3

Hello there! Before we continue with the article I kindly ask you to consider showing your support and appreciation for my work by tipping me via my Ko-Fi page here. Tips are quite rare around these parts, but I assure you no matter how big or small, each tip is deeply appreciated. Now, let’s get on with the news!

The third season of the hit Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, lands on our screens in mere weeks, debuting on Disney’s streaming service on March 1st. In the build up we’ve come to learn who’s landed directing duties this season with some new faces and some familiar. One of those familiar faces is Rick Famuyiwa, who previously directed two episodes of The Mandalorian season one – Chapters two and six, as well as one episode of season two – Chapter fifteen. In addition to returning to directing duties this season, Famuyiwa has also been bumped up to an executive producer of the series and the minds behind the show, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, have started branching out with other series tied to the ‘MandoVerse’ with Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew, two series that are also due to release later this year. Though we know who our directors are this season, we don’t know which episodes they’ve shot, but it may have been revealed which episodes Rick Famuyiwa directed thanks to a couple of stars on the series.

Speaking with The Virtual Cantina, Emily Swallow, who plays The Armourer, and Tait Fletcher, who plays Paz Vizla, revealed that Famuyiwa directed the first and last episodes of The Mandalorian season three. When discussing his experience working on the upcoming season, Fletcher told the podcast, “Rick was one of my favourites to work with…. The kind of space the director’s hold really speak to the way of the set behaves, and you can really feel that. It was excellent man, an excellent experience. It was like being in a masterclass in film making.” Swiftly Swallow chimes in saying, “Yeah I second that. It was so incredible to work with such diverse directors who collaborated so well, and so generously. I worked with Rick more than anyone else, and I really appreciated that. He for [The Mandalorian] season 3 directed our first and last episode – and that was really incredible. Seeing him start out the journey of the season, and end the season. Because we’re shooting completely out of order, we’re jumping back and forth between episodes, and to know he was taking care of where we were beginning and where we needed to end up. It was really good.“

Swallow’s comments reveal that the forthcoming season was shot out of order, and that Famuyiwa directed Swallow and Fletcher’s first and last episodes. The comment could be taken to mean that he simply directed the first and last episode they shot, which again, they revealed the season was shot out of order so the first episode they shot might not be the first episode of the season. However it’s Swallow saying that Famuyiwa was taking care of where they were beginning, and where they needed to end up that makes me believe she was speaking in a literal sense, and that Rick Famuyiwa has directed both the season opener and the season closer.

In addition to Rick Famuyiwa, other directors this season includes, Carl Weathers, Bryce Dallas Howard, Peter Ramsey, Rachel Morrison, and Lee Isaac Chung. The Mandalorian debuts exclusively on Disney+ March 1st.
