Ryan Gosling has revealed why he decided to join Star Wars following years of leading standalone films and not joining a large blockbuster franchise. Star Wars Starfighter still over a year away from release but fans are buzzing more for this film than this May’s The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Even though we know very little about Star Wars Starfighter, the combination of Gosling leading a post-Episode 9 film that is directed by Shawn Levy without strings attached is an exciting one for fans. That’s without naming the rest of the cast and discussing various rumours.
Gosling has taken part in a new interview with io9 ahead of his new film Project Hail Mary releases. The actor was asked why now for taking up a leading role in a popular film franchise.
“It was Shawn’s enthusiasm and his vision and the script. I just avoided these things because they never felt right. And I’m glad I did because I feel like, [similar to] a book like this (Project Hail Mary), [it was] worth waiting for. And it is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
So there you have it. Gosling has put off joining large franchises because he didn’t feel good about what he was going to be doing. With Star Wars Starfighter’s script, he knew this was his time.

This interview comes a few days after a new report exposed Disney and Lucasfilm’s feelings towards the two upcoming Star Wars films. Whilst The Mandalorian and Grogu interest is cool and there’s a sense marketing is failed, Star Wars Starfighter is said to have “recaptured” the magic of Star Wars. Additionally, Ryan Gosling’s performance in the leading role has been praised by insiders. Learn more here.
