New details of the 50th anniversary re-release of Star Wars have confirmed. This comes a couple months after Lucasfilm announced cinemas will be playing the original film for a limited time next year. This is just one part of the company’s plans for the franchises half-century celebrations.
In issue #236 of Star Wars Insider, there is confirmation via the mag that what we’ll get in cinemas next year is going to be what people want: the original version of Star Wars without any changes made.
As spotted by Reddit user EyGunni, Insider 236’s Launchpad section features a small update on next year’s theatrical re-release. According to the publication, “it has been confirmed that it will be shown in its original 1977 form” and not the Special Edition that George Lucas put out in 1996 with different scenes and new visual effects.
It has been an open secret, with numerous leaks, that this will also be a restored version of the film. Due to various reasons such as aging masters, lost film and more, this was the way to do it. Star Wars Insider states “a full restoration is underway” on 1977’s Star Wars.

It will be re-released in cinemas on February 19th 2027 for a limited period of time. It was also re-confirmed last week it will be played in IMAX from this date too. This re-release kick off the film and franchise’s 50th anniversary. Star Wars Celebration should be an event unlike any other with special announcements in April. Star Wars Starfighter will release the following month.
