Fuse Games have used their talents to perfect every single track in Star Wars Galactic Racer. Where some games have gone for scale at the cost of quality via procedurally-generated content, this new Star Wars project has been done with a labour of love and decades of experience.
Kieran Crimmins who is creative director on the game spoke with GamesRadar on a number of things. One of them is track design. The game’s director explained how “Learning a track is fundamental to a racing game.” This meant that the tracks found in Star Wars Galactic Racer “are not procedurally-generated.”
Crimmins admits “we tried it – it just didn’t work” but they ended up going for making everything by hand. The reason is because Fuse Games “want you to learn the tracks, the shortcuts, all of it.” The designers and artists have “put so much effort and design into making sure that our tracks are really exciting, so we didn’t really want to go there.”
Limited Locations

As we’ve learned from the recent hands-on previews, Star Wars Galactic Racer does not only feature 4 or 5 tracks. As of now, there are at least 4 planets in the game with 4 to 5 tracks each plus a few other one-off locations with a course. On top of that, many of the tracks can be played in a reverse layout too. This adds a whole other layer of replayability. Those that played the game last month also spoke on how each planet felt different from eachother and so did each track despite some coming from the same biome.
As we’ve seen in many video games, including Star Wars titles, more does not always equal better and less actually is more. Some Star Wars fans protest how much they’d want an infinite number of procedurally-generated planets and 3D models to fulfil their fantasies at the cost of the worlds being shallow. They balk when provided with meticulously handcrafted locations which can only be achieved when you don’t over commit. Star Wars Outlaws is a fantastic example of this. Fans who played the game truly felt like they lived in Star Wars thanks to the deep and inspired artistry in the several open-world planets found in the game.
