Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake reportedly dead, Sony and PlayStation looking to cut ties

It’s been two years since Sony announced a remake of the beloved Knights of the Old Republic at their PlayStation showcase. Since that time, the only updates fans have received about the development of the title have been negative, with development seemingly not going well, switching studios and constant rumours of the game being in trouble. Today, a reliable video games insider and journalist has shared what they know of the current situation, publicly declaring that the Knights of the Old Republic Remake is, “deader than dog-shit.”

Before we continue with news of the day, I’d just like to share that you can support my work in two ways for which I’d be extremely grateful. Firstly it’s via my newly created Patreon page which has a two tier’s at this time – one to simply to support my work and a second which features ad-free articles. Secondly you can tip me with a simple one off payment on my Ko-Fi page or you can choose to support my work monthly on the platform. I’d truly appreciate it if you decided to support my work, but no pressure, I know things are pretty tough out here. Anyway, back to the reason you came here – the news!

The unfortunate news comes to us from recognised and reputable industry insider, Jeff Grubb, who took to his podcast and YouTube show, Game Mess Mornings, to share what he’s been hearing in regards to the troubled project. The conversation started when Grubb and his co-host, Tamoor Hussain, discussed the Embracer Group CEO refusing to talk about KOTOR recently, with the CEO claiming that anytime he talks about the title it makes headlines. Grubb and Hussain joked that this move is similar to singer Mariah Carey often claiming she doesn’t know who the singer and actress Jennifer Lopez is, refusing to acknowledge their existence.

This spurred Grubb to share with viewers what he believes the situation to be from his trusted sources, revealing that the remake is currently not being worked on by any studio under Embracer Group and is not being worked on whatsoever. Embracer Group own the studios touted to work on the KOTOR Remake, Aspyr and Saber Interactive. Aspyr were the studio announced back in 2021 to be developing the title with Saber later stepping on as a support studio. However, Saber later took full control of development of the project.

“I just want to clear it up. This game [Knights of the Old Republic Remake] is not being worked on right now. Just full stop. This game is not being worked on by any studio.” – Jeff Grubb

Grubb went on to reference the confusion from a couple of months ago when the Knights of the Old Republic Remake trailer was made private on YouTube by Sony/Playstation, with the company deleting announcements of the title from social media. Embracer Group later claimed that the posts were removed and videos were made private due to an error with licensed music featured in the trailer.

Grubb went on to claim that Sony want nothing to do with the project anymore despite having co-publishing rights and helped finance the project which would be a PlayStation 5 console exclusive. Grubb went on to say that only Sony or Disney could step in and attempt to save the game, though it seems unlikely at this time, especially given Sony’s apparent stance and desperation to move on from the project.

“I don’t think this is news to most of you. You guys can piece it together if you’ve been listening to this [Game Mess Mornings] and Sony stepping away and scrubbing any mention of Knights of the Old Republic from social media and YouTube. But just to one hundred percent confirm it, this game is not being worked on right now. The only two entities that could step in are Sony, which has the co-publishing rights [for Knights of the Old Republic Remake] and Lucasfilm/Disney. Sony want nothing to do with this [KOTOR], that’s what it seems like, I’ve heard echoes of that – they want absolutely nothing to do with this going forward.” – Jeff Grubb

Just to emphasise what he’s been hearing in regards to the troubled Knights of the Old Republic Remake’s development, Grubb reiterated that the game is currently not being worked on and is, “deader than dog-shit.” Grubb added that perhaps something could come into play that saves the game and jump starts development, but that’s not the case at this time and that in his personal opinion, Grubb believes that the title will never be released.

“No way this game ever happens. That’s my opinion right now. Maybe that changes, maybe some huge factor comes into play that we aren’t considering right now. But as it stands right now, this game is deader than dog-shit and it’s very unlikely to ever come out.”
