Star Wars: Lando writer reveals the series is now a movie

Just recently fans learned that Solo: A Star Wars Story star, Donald Glover, and his brother, Stephen Glover, were taking over writing duties on the long in development Lando series. However, according to Stephen Glover, that planned series has now turned into a movie.

Before we continue with news of the day, I’d just like to share that you can support my work in two ways for which I’d be extremely grateful. Firstly it’s via my newly created Patreon page which has a two tier’s at this time – one to simply to support my work and a second which features ad-free articles. Secondly you can tip me with a simple one off payment on my Ko-Fi page or you can choose to support my work monthly on the platform. I’d truly appreciate it if you decided to support my work, but no pressure, I know things are pretty tough out here. Anyway, back to the reason you came here – the news!

During an appearance on the podcast, Pablo Torre Finds Out, Stephen Glover was congratulated by the host on landing the writing gig on Lando alongside his brother Donald. The writer began laughing and initially attempted to dance around the hosts comment, but quickly revealed that Lando is actually a movie, and no longer a series as first announced back in 2020. Glover added that due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, he and the studio are sort of playing a game of telephone in regards to information that’s released publicly, with Glover and the host even joking that the latter could become their information broker. You can read’ Glover’s comments below.

“Oh boy, you shouldn’t have said that. I mean, I can pretty much be like, we’re doing a…it’s not even show. I’m sure the nerds will figure it out anyway, they’ll read my lips or something. The idea right now is to do a movie, you know? Like that’s the thing, like right now, because of the strike, it’s sort of like telephone with all the information coming out.” – Stephen Glover

The Lando series was first announced in December 2020 during Disney’s Investor’s Day, where Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, revealed that Dear White People creator, Justin Simien, was penning the scripts for the Disney+ series. Word on the series had been pretty much non-existent until this year when Above the Line exclusively reported in July that Donald Glover, who starred as Lando Calrissian in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, and his brother, Stephen Glover, had taken over writing duties from Simien, who quietly exited the project sometime ago. Simien claimed that he had no idea he was off of the project until the reports came out, but wished the best of luck to the Glover brothers.

Donald and Stephen Glover both wrote on the critically acclaimed FX series, Atlanta, of which Donald also starred in. The series ran for four seasons and wrapped up last year. The duo also worked on the film Guava Island which starred Donald and popstar, Rihanna. Donald has since written the series Swarm for Amazon Prime Video which released earlier this year and is set to star in another Prime project, Mr and Mrs Smith, a series which he stars in and wrote which is due to release early next year.

Lando becoming a film is most certainly a surprise to me, and I’m now doubtful it’ll see the light of day, unless it becomes a Disney+ release. Lucasfilm abandoned plans of releasing films focusing on legacy characters after the commercial failure that was Solo: A Star Wars Story. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny scribe, James Mangold, who’s also writing a Star Wars movie (who isn’t?), revealed that plans for his Boba Fett flick was abandoned following Solo’s failure. Lucasfilm instead opted to release Disney+ series focusing on Boba Fett (The Book of Boba Fett) and Obi-Wan Kenobi, two characters that were set to have films releasing after Solo.

Currently we have many Star Wars films in development that have been officially announced by Lucasfilm. As of the time of writing we have a Rey Skywalker focused film being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy which is rumoured to be the Star Wars film set for release in May 2026, Dave Filoni’s MandoVerse crossover event film expected to release in December 2026, Taika Waititi’s mysterious film that he’s been developing for over three years, James Mangold’s dawn of the Jedi flick, Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars effort, and now, possibly the Glovers brothers Lando.
