Five days ago, Lucasfilm hosted Star Wars Celebration in London, and showcased a plethora of new trailers for their upcoming TV shows, and announced three brand new movies from directors Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, and James Mangold, but what’s interesting is that none of them were given a release date or window, despite Lucasfilm and Disney having reserved December dates in 2025 and 2027 for two untitled Star Wars movies. Now, we have an update with some insight as to when when can expect Star Wars to return to the big screen.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the upcoming film focusing on Rey Skywalker’s New Jedi Order is aiming to release on December 19th, 2025 according to their sources, but as of now, nothing in set in stone. The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as the film, according to Kathleen Kennedy, has been in development for a few years, with Lost’s Damon Lindelof initially writing on the project before parting ways last month and being replaced with Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight. The films development has been reported on for over a year, but was not officially confirmed until Friday, when Lucasfilm brought out the films director, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) and star, Daisy Ridley, to thunderous applause at Star Wars Celebration. Fans have long speculated that the Obaid-Chinoy project would land the December 2025 release date, a date Lucasfilm have had reserved for a Star Wars movie for three years, given the amount of momentum and confidence behind the project within past year.
THR go on to mention that Lucasfilm are aiming/hoping to release another film announced at Star Wars Celebration, a movie that’ll be used as a crossover event for multiple live-action Star Wars series including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Book of Boba Fett, one year after the Rey focused movie – which gives us a window of December 2026. Unlike the New Jedi Order movie, this flick had not been rumoured until mere hours before the the Celebration event took place. Kathleen Kennedy introduced the executive producer of the series previously mentioned, Dave Filoni, to the stage to announce the project which he’ll direct. Filoni and Kennedy remained tight lipped on the film, but Filoni revealed it’ll feature characters from the Filoni-Favreau timeline and focus on the conflict between the New Republic and Imperial Remnant.
Disney currently have a fourth Avatar film dated for December 2026, with Disney previously revealing they planned to release a Star Wars and Avatar film bi-annually, with the next Star Wars film listed after 2025 being dated for December 2027. It would most certainly be a surprise if Disney decided to delay a fourth Avatar film for the Mando movie given the success Disney recently saw with Avatar: The Way of Water, which made more at the box office than Lucasfilm’s last four Star Wars films. However, the mastermind behind the Avatar franchise, James Cameron, has recently revealed that he hopes to release Avatar 4 three years after Avatar 3, which gives the fourth instalment a rough release window of December 2027. THR mentions that Filoni’s Mando crossover flick is timeline dependent on the various Disney+ series pertaining to The Mandalorian and it’s spin-off’s, with a particular focus on the former’s fourth season and supposed second season of Ahsoka, which has not been greenlit and is dependent on the success of its first season which releases this August.
The article mentions that the newly announced Dawn of the Jedi movie from James Mangold (Logan) is the furthest away from release, with Mangold set to begin filming his Bob Dylan biopic this Summer after the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Following the production, post-production, and release of the Dylan flick, Mangold will continue to focus his efforts of writing two movies, the Star Wars film, and Swamp Thing for DC Studios, with Mangold confirmed during Celebration that he’s writing as well as directing. If Avatar 4 and Star Wars swap dates, it’s likely we won’t see the Mangold project until 2028 or 2029 at the earliest, if it ever happens, and I sincerely hope it does.
