Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) during The Mandalorian and Grogu panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan announced the title of his Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, along with a release date of May 28th, 2027.
In addition, Levy revealed that the film was set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, though it will be a standalone movie. Levy also brought out rumoured star Ryan Gosling (La La Land) to confirm his involvement in the project and that filming will begin this Fall.

Fans had initially expected Starfighter (it feels so good to no longer have to write untitled Shawn Levy movie) in December 2027, as Lucasfilm and Disney currently hold a release date for an untitled Star Wars film there. There’s been no update if a Star Wars movie will still arrive on that day or if it’s been pushed forward to May 2027. Personally I would be a little surprised to see two Star Wars movies in a single year.
Lucasfilm are currently in the casting process for Starfighter and reportedly have sent offers to Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Game Night) and Mikey Madison (Anora, Scream), the latter turned down the role, and have been considering Jodie Comer (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Free Guy) for a role.
Lucasfilm are currently looking to cast the lead of the movie, a fifteen year old boy, two villains (one of which Plemons has an offer for), the leads mother, and another supporting female role (which Madison turned down).
No plot details have been revealed about the film, or if it has any relation to the 2001 video game with the same title, but Ryan Gosling shared what attracted him to the project below.
“The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn [Levy].”
