Star Wars: The Acolyte Jedi Master Sol featurette reveals new footage

In one month today, The Acolyte, the latest live-action Star Wars series, will debut on Disney+ with two episodes. As we’ve seen in recent days and weeks, promoting for the High Repuic era series has been ramping up, and today, in celebration of Star Wars day, Disney have released a new featurette with a good amount of new footage that focuses on Jedi Master Sol.

The featurette was released on the Disney+ Korea YouTube channel in celebration of May the 4th. Last week the same channel released a video of Master Sol’s actor, Lee Jung-Jae, wishing people a happy Star Wars day alongside footage (mostly old) from The Acolyte. This time around, the YouTube channel focuses of Master Sol, with new footage to boot, with quotes from the Jung-Jae himself, the series creator Leslye Headland, director Kogonada, and series lead, Amandla Stenberg.

The footage opens with a glimpse of Sol in the forest where he and a number of other Jedi come face-to-face with a mystery darkside user wielding a red lightsaber, who we might’ve gotten our first look at yesterday. Sol mentions that the mysterious threat holds the weapon of a Jedi, but is undoubtedly not a Jedi, as he raises his blue lightsaber near his now scuffed and dirty face – exactly how you’d look after a scrap in a forest.

Jung-Jae speaks throughout the trailer in Korean, which I assume many of my readers would not be able to understand, so you can read a translation of Jung-Jae’s comments below.

“I can’t believe the fact that I am in Star Wars. I can still remember, as a kid, being in awe seeing Star Wars for the first time on the big screen.

Sol has a great sense of responsibility. As a Jedi master, he’s a highly skilled fighter, but who is willing to risk everything to protect peace. Many times, Sol will try to keep his feelings in check. He does what he can to contain his emotions and not reveal what he’s really feeling inside.

In Korea, I’ve had quite a lot of experience in word fighting action sequences. But I soon realised the skill of working with a lightsaber is a unique challenge.

The Acolyte is an original Star Wars story filled with mystery and suspense.”

The new footage see’s Sol encounter Amandla Stenberg’s Mae in a town as they fight with Sol asking Mae who trained her. We also see Sol in a snowy environment letting out an emotional smile to a character that appears to be Mae – we only see the back of the head of the character, but the hairstyle seems to reveal that it is Stenberg’s character.

The footage also features many shots of Sol piloting a starship with a panicked look along with him meeting with Venestra Rwoh inside the Jedi temple, exploring caves with fellow Jedi and strutting through the town he encounters Mae with some fellow Jedi. We see multiple shots of Sol, along with other Jedi, in the forest where they confront the darkside user which was first shown in the official trailer for the series. We also see Sol sporting short hair, implying the scenes are from the past or the future as Sol sports a much shorter haircut and a fringe. The look was first seen in set photos from the Brecon Beacons in Wales as Sol skulked through a forest. Stenberg at the time was spotted on the same set, as was the Wookiee Jedi, Kelnacca. The shots with the shorter look in the footage is of the Brecon Beacons shoots, I should know, I frequented the area enough as it was being filmed.

Set during the High Republic era, The Acolyte, will follow an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

The Acolyte stars Amandla Stenberg (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies) as the lead, as well as Lee Jung Jae (Squid Game), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Jodie Turner-Smith (After Yang), Charlie Bennett (Russian Doll), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Dean Charles Chapman (1917), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) and Margarita Levieva (Daredevil: Born Again).

The Acolyte premieres on Disney+ on June 4th with TWO episodes.
