We’ve got an update on Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu and what may have been an involvement at Cannes Film Festival. The film will begin its theatrical run in a little over two months, on May 22nd, so a window that is ripe for a premiere at the prestigious festival.
There had been a rumour at the start of the month from French publication Paris Match there was a possibility of the Jon Favreau directed flick being shown first at Cannes Film Festival. The event is set to take place from May 13th through May 23rd.
A counter to this is Deadline who have just put their Cannes Film Festival article covering what they have heard will or will not be in attendance. The trade publication wrote “We hear that Cannes can also cross off May releases such as Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, Pressure and In The Grey.”
They go onto say whilst “Cannes has prided itself on mixing the cream of the arthouse crop with a sprinkling of big studio buzz movies, but the latter are looking very thin on the ground this edition. Nothing akin to Top Gun or Indiana Jones in sight.”
This breaks tradition of a Lucasfilm spring release not showing up at the festival. Solo: A Star Wars Story debuted at Cannes Film Festival eight years ago out of competition. Going further back, both Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in 2002 and 2005 also played at Cannes. Meanwhile Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny suffered from harsh criticism which followed the film through its worldwide release in 2023. Perhaps Lucasfilm has learned their lesson and do not want to harm TMAG even more as it has a uphill climb to box office success.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will release first in French and Swedish theatres on May 20th. A wider release in regions such as the USA and UK is set for May 22nd.
