Alleged images from Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu that have been going viral are fake. That’s according to a senior director at ILM.
A couple of images were posted to Twitter on Wednesday which showed a new, clear look at Rotta the Hutt from Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu. Except it is not real. Where many outlets decided to not to any sort of due diligence and spread the pictures, we noticed the account posting these images is known for using AI on Star Wars content. The images also contain signs of AI generation.
Due to the virality of these images, ILM’s Hal Hickle had to step in. Known for his work as an animation supervisor on The Mandalorian, Rogue One, The Book of Boba Fett and more, Hal is someone who can trust. The animation director took to BlueSky to debunk these AI generated images. He said “There is an image of Rotta the Hutt circulating on social right now. It’s BS. It’s not from the film. Ignore it.”
Large pop culture social media accounts that are no stranger to spreading misinformation still have posts of the images up at the time of writing. Accounts include Discussing Film, Culture Crave and other usual suspects. Be sure to add such accounts to your block list to avoid seeing fake leaks on your timeline.
This comes a hours after Empire Magazine revealed a Star Wars news drop. Their next cover story is all about Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu and we have new images and more. Check out what has been published so far from their big Mando issue here. The Mandalorian and Grogu releases in theatres and in IMAX on May 22nd.
