Studio Ghibli announce collaboration with Lucasfilm

Hello there! Before we continue with the article, I kindly ask for you to consider showing your support and appreciation for my work by tipping me via my Ko-Fi page here. Tips are quite rare around these parts, but I assure you no matter how big or small, each tip is deeply appreciated. Now, let’s get on with the news!

The iconic Japanese animation studio, Studio Ghibli, took to social media today to announce a collaboration with Lucasfilm. Neither Studio Ghibli or Lucasfilm announced details of their collaborative effort, but the partnership is exciting nonetheless.

The natural assumption is that Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm are working on some kind of Star Wars project, which is more than likely the case, but we must remember that Lucasfilm is more than just Star Wars so there’s always a chance the collaboration isn’t something set in a galaxy far, far away. Some fans have started to speculate that Studio Ghibli might be providing an episode for the next season of Star Wars: Visions, an animated anthology series of nine anime-inspired episodes, but again that’s merely speculation, though I hope it’s something more.

Another Lucasfilm project we must consider, and the one I think that’s most likely, is Star Wars Zen: Grogu and the Dust Bunnies, an entry in the Disney Zen anthology series which focuses on sounds and visuals from some of Disney’s most iconic franchises. Recently Disney Italy revealed that Grogu and the Dust Bunnies will release on November 12th, but no additional information outside of its title was revealed. The primary reason I think it may be Ghibli related is the due to the Dust Bunnies, as they were featured in the Studio Ghibli film, My Neighbor Totoro, but under name Susuwatari.

Studio Ghibli are best known for creating some of the most beloved, iconic and inspiring animated films of all time including Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro to name a few, the latter of which is used in the studio’s logo. Though Ghibli have made an animated television series before, Ronja The Robber’s Daughter, and a handful of short films, they are best known for their animated feature films and my hope is that the Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm collaboration is for an animated feature.
