Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie will not film this year

Last month at Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, got fans very excited and hopeful that the next Star Wars film would arrive in cinemas late next year, and that film would come from Jojo Rabbit director, Taika Waititi. Speaking with Total Film, Kennedy said, “Well not 2023, but late 2023. We haven’t locked anything in yet,” but now the director himself has spoken out regarding the speculation that his Star Wars project could film by the years end.

During an interview with The Wrap, Waititi was asked if he plans on shooting his highly anticipated Star Wars film this year, to which the Thor: Love and Thunder director responded saying, “Not this year. I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits, and during that time I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”

Waititi’s comments come as no surprise given his schedule, something we’ve reminded fans of each time a report has been released regarding his Star Wars film which he’s writing alongside 1917’s Krysty Wilson-Cairns, but with Waititi saying that they’re still trying to figure out what the story of the project is, it feels as if the project is quite some time away.

Initially Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron was due to release in December 2023, but due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts, Squadron was indefinitely delayed with Jenkins having to ramp up pre-production on Wonder Woman 3 which is rumoured to shoot next year for a 2024 release. Two other Star Wars film dates were announced, one in December 2025, and the other in December 2027. Waititi’s film was expected in 2025, whilst the 2027 film was that produced by Kevin Feige and written by Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).
