The Mandalorian season three will film from September 20th to March 23rd

Hello there! Now that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is in the bag, we now turn our attention to the next production…The Mandalorian season three.

Previously it was reported by Production Weekly that The Mandalorian had a start date of September 20th, but we’ve had reports of false start dates before from trustworthy outlets such as the FTIA (Film & Television Industry Alliance). A new listing appeared online yesterday, once again from Production Weekly, claiming the September 20th start date and an end date of March 23rd. I am pleased to say that according to my sources, The Mandalorian season three will begin filming at Manhattan Beach Studios on September 20th, they’ll begin filming at train yard location sometime in October and March was also what I was told as to when it was due to wrap, so this is definitely legitimate. I was told of the September 20th start date three weeks ago and was told October train yard filming and March wrap earlier this week by sources close to the production.

What does this late September start tell us? Well typically The Mandalorian seasons have released eleven to thirteen months after the season begins filming. Season one began filming in October 2018 and started releasing episodes in November 2019 – thirteen months after filming started. The second season began filming in November 2019 and began releasing episodes in October 2020 – eleven months after filming started. I would expect the third season to follow this pattern and it’s even happening with The Book of Boba Fett which had a longer production. The Book of Boba Fett began filming in November 2020, and will begin releasing episodes this December – thirteen months after filming started.

One thing that’s worth mentioning is this is the longest The Mandalorian was ever shot for. Typically The Mandalorian shoots take around four months, but season three is set to take six months. I don’t know why, but personally I’m assuming it’s due to COVID precautions. The Book of Boba Fett took seven months in total to film and the rules and regulations of filming during pandemic was certainly a factor in the length of time it took to film the series.

2022 is going to be an incredible years for Star Wars with all of these live-action series, video games and a second season of The Bad Batch. I for one cannot wait.
