Three Star Wars movies to be announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023

According to reputable journalist and insider, and co-host of The Hot Mic podcast, Jeff Sneider, Lucasfilm plan on announcing three Star Wars movies at this years Star Wars Celebration which takes place in London and kicks off on April 7th. Jeff Sneider didn’t provide any details as to what those movies set to be announced will be, but I’d wager we already know of all three.

First up we have movie being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) which is now being written by Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight, following the departure of the films original writers, Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart). The film is expected to release on December 19th, 2025, with the film being formally announced at Celebration, along with a title and a brief synopsis. The film reportedly takes place sometime after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and will not be tied to the Skywalker saga.

In addition to an untitled Star Wars film releasing in December 2025, there’s another Star Wars film set to release in December 2027. Currently there are two other Star Wars movies in development outside of the Knight/Obaid-Chinoy project. In 2020, Thor: Love and Thunder director, Taika Waititi, was announced to be writing and directing a Star Wars movie, with the flick initially planned to release in December 2025 – the date now reserved for the aforementioned Knight/Obaid-Chinoy film. Its possible that Waititi’s Star Wars film takes the 2027 release date, as by that point the film would have been in development for seven years.

Lastly we have a film being developed by Free Guy director, Shawn Levy. It was reported by various trades last year that Levy was getting to work on his own Star Wars film, with the director later confirming the reports on Twitter and in various interviews. Levy reportedly won’t start work on the Star Wars project until his next film, Deadpool 3, has been released in theatres, with the film currently set for a November 2024 release. Given that Levy won’t start work on his Star Wars film until 2024 or 2025, it’s likely his project won’t be the 2027 release, and could obtain a release date of December 2029, if the current release date pattern is to be followed.

Though we can expect Star Wars films to be announced at Star Wars Celebration this year, don’t expect any announcements of series from Lucasfilm’s other franchises. According to Jeff Sneider, Lucasfilm have been ordered by Disney to only work on Star Wars series and films, and that a planned Indiana Jones series has been scrapped, as had a second season of Willow. Sneider said:

“Here’s a concerning thing. Not a concerning thing – it didn’t surprise me whatsoever when I heard it. I’ve heard from a good source that Ravenwood-Indiana Jones series at Lucasfilm is dead. And i’m told that Disney told Lucasfilm that you’re only making Star Wars stuff from now on. They cancelled Willow, they have Indiana Jones 5 coming out, but you tell me – does that feel like one of the biggest movies of the Summer?” – Jeff Sneider
