Untitled Rey Skywalker Star Wars movie possibly releasing in December 2026

This week has seen multiple reports on the untitled Rey Skywalker film set social media abuzz, in particular when fans could expect to see the flick hit the big screen. Now, a reliable insider has weighed in on the matter, revealing what he has heard regarding when the Daisy Ridley led Star Wars movie will release in theatres.

Earlier this week there was a report from World of Reel that claimed the Rey movie had suffered an indefinite delay (not cancelled), and Gizmodo reported that the film had had not suffered a delay. Many insiders and the Hollywood trades had reported since last year that the next Star Wars film to be released in cinemas would be the Rey film being directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. In June of last year, Lucasfilm announced three release dates for untitled Star Wars movies – May 22nd, 2026, December 18th, 2026 and December 17th, 2027. However, Lucasfilm did not publicly commit any of their announced Star Wars movies to those dates, which at the time included the aforementioned Rey film, an untitled Mandalorian crossover from Dave Filoni, an origins of the Jedi movie from James Mangold, and films from directors Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy.

Reliable insider, Jeff Sneider, took to Twitter and his podcast, The Hot Mic, earlier this week and teased that the untitled Rey Skywalker film would release in December 2026, but that he’d reveal more later this week. Sneider has been on the pulse of the Rey movie since the start. Sneider was first to break that Damon Lindelof, the original writer of the Rey film, was working on a Star Wars movie and was also the individual that broke that Lindelof was let go from the project in March last year. In June last since, Sneider reported that the Rey movie was set to be the next Star Wars movie to release in theatres (May 2026) and revealed that Lucasfilm were looking to begin filming in April 2024 – however this didn’t come to fruition due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that were ongoing at the time. In December, one month before The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced, Sneider shared that a Mandalorian movie would be the next Star Wars movie released.

And that brings us to now, where Jeff Sneider, via his paid newsletter, which you can find here and I encourage you to subscribe, has shared what he knows regarding the Daisy Ridley led movie. Sneider wrote that the films current writer, Steven Knight, is deep into working on his next draft and that the film is developing at a normal pace for the studio. Sneider added that he believes the untitled Rey Skywalker film could land in theatres on December 18th, 2026 and will not release in May 2026, that date has been marked for the recently announced The Mandalorian and Grogu, which makes complete sense given that last week when The Mandalorian and Grogu was announced that Lucasfilm touted it would lead their theatrical slate. It’s worth noting that Sneider isn’t saying it’s definitely the December 2026 release, but as of now, he believes it’s the second Star Wars movie to set to release following The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Away from release dates, Sneider, in his newsletter, shared that he’s heard that Daisy Ridley is receiving a bumper payday for her Rey return, revealing that the actress is getting paid $12.5M for the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directed flick. Maybe it’s a hint, or maybe it isn’t, but Sneider tells readers to stay tuned when pondering if a lucrative payday, like what Ridley is receiving, will be enough to entice other sequel trilogy stars to the project.

Personally, I was hoping that the Rey film would take the December 2027 window, and that December 2026 would see the release of Dave Filoni’s MandoVerse crossover movie. At least to me, releasing the two Mandalorian centric films back-to-back I feel would create real synergy and would be the MandoVerse equivalent of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. However, I’d very much like to see that Lucasfilm try to reunite some of the stars of the sequel trilogy for the Rey film, I’d love to see a John Boyega return, and hopefully they would do his character of Finn justice this time around.
