It’s been six months since Lucasfilm and Disney debuted the first trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first Star Wars film to grace the big screen in seven years, and fans have been wondering when they’ll finally get to see a second trailer with the release of the movie just over three months away.
Many fans assumed that the Super Bowl would be a prime candidate for a release, or at least a TV spot would debut that would showcase brief scenes from the flick to help market the feature film to general audiences. The Hollywood trades said that The Mandalorian and Grogu would be expected to be present during the big game and it was, just not how fans expected. So when can we expect to see another trailer? We have a couple of ideas and we must stress, that is all these are.
Typically final trailers for major theatrical films release six to eight weeks before the release of the movie. Given that The Mandalorian and Grogu is due to release on May 22nd, the best bet given the timeline is that the next trailer will likely release sometime in mid to late March or early April.
What Will It Be Attached To?

Looking at Disney’s current release calendar, there’s only one real contender to have a new trailer attached to — Hoppers, the latest effort from Pixar that’s due to release on March 6th. Disney were attaching a slightly different version of The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer that debuted in September to Zootopia 2 when it released back in November, so they’re seemingly willing to attach Mando material to films targeting a slightly younger audience.
The biggest flaw in the logic of attaching it to Hoppers is simply that it feels too early (Mar 6) and that Hoppers does not feel like a blockbuster release that’ll help get eyes on The Mandalorian and Grogu. Zootopia 2 was tracking pretty big (Hoppers is not) and it went on to gross over $1.8B at the box office, it made sense to have important future film releases attached to that and Avatar: Fire and Ash a month later. So probably not as soon as the Hoppers release unfortunately.
In the past, when we had Star Wars movies releasing more frequently, it was an often occurrence that the final trailers for the sequel trilogy films would be attached to sports — namely NBA and NFL games. The NFL season came to an end over the past weekend, but the NBA regular season does not end until April 12th.
It fits the aforementioned window (six to eight weeks before release) and follows a tried and true marketing strategy that Disney and Lucasfilm have executed in the past. So could we see the next Mandalorian and Grogu trailer attached to an NBA game? It feels possible and again, it’s a tried and proven method that Disney and Lucasfilm have used previously which could be an indicator.
