Today Disney updated their theatrical release schedule, which runs from 2022 through 2028, and I was quite surprised to see Star Wars: Rogue Squadron clutching onto its previously announced December 22nd, 2023 release date given it was previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter that the project had been delayed indefinitely due to director Patty Jenkins’ schedule.

It was reported that Jenkins and the filmmaking team behind Rogue Squadron came to the realisation that Jenkins’ schedule would not permit her adequate time to film the project in 2022 and thus Disney and Lucasfilm removed Rogue Squadron from their production schedule.

At the time it wasn’t revealed as to why Jenkins’ schedule all of a sudden didn’t allow for her to film Rogue Squadron, as she’d previously mentioned it would film ahead of Wonder Woman 3, and Cleopatra, the latter of which Jenkins quit as director following the Squadron delay to focus on Wonder Woman 3 and Rogue Squadron. However shortly after, it was reported that Warner Bros had pushed up the release window for the untitled third Wonder Woman movie to 2024, leading fans to speculate that Warner pushing the Wonder Woman release forward and Jenkins already having an existing contract for the project led to the film taking priority over Star Wars.

Puck News later claimed that the reason for the delay was “creative differences” between Jenkins and Lucasfilm who could not agree on a script, but those reports were unconfirmed.

Disney’s updated motion picture release schedule

If Rogue Squadron is actually sticking with its December 2023 release, then we should expect to hear updates on the project very soon.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was announced back in December 2020 at the Disney’s Investors Day and is set to be directed by Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins who wrote the script alongside Matthew Robinson, who’s previous efforts include Love and Monsters, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, Monster Trucks, and The Invention of Lying.

Elsewhere Disney’s schedule confirmed that the two other previously announced untitled Star Wars films remain dated for December 19th, 2025 and December 17th, 2027. The film dated for 2025 is expected to be directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit), who will write the film alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho). The movie dated for 2027 is expected to be produced by Kevin Feige and written by Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).
