Star Wars Fate of the Old Republic is being financed by a brand new video game holding company who have raised $100 million so far. The upcoming spiritual successor to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic found its investment partner in GreaterThan Group (GTG). Details on how the game is being funded and its scale has been revealed through a press release.
New Company, New Info
GreaterThan Group call themselves a “new model” game company. They are looking to “unleash the potential of the world’s most talented individuals in interactive entertainment.” This will be done by “stripping away the distractions to provide elite creators, providing full funding, end-to-end support, and autonomy”.
GTG say they are a co-owner of Fate of the Old Republic’s developer Arcanaut Studios but not the majority or sole owner. The rest of the studio is owned by its founding members such as the game’s director Casey Hudson.
The firm was founded by Simon Zhu. He was previously NetEase’s president of global investments and partnerships before the Chinese company quickly cut off western gaming deals. GTG is US-based and signed SWFOTOR as one of their first two games. GreaterThan Group believe Casey and the team at Arcanaut have a “vision to craft magical, interactive storytelling experiences will set a new bar for the [RPG] genre.”

Cash In Hand
According to Zhu in an interview with Bloomberg, GTG has $40 million of the $100m in cash. The remainder of the full time is going to come from future funding commitments. The investors who provided this capital could not be disclosed though are a mix of gaming and tech entrepreneurs Zhu says.
Alongside this news, Hudson revealed that the game won’t take players hundreds of hours to complete nor more than 5 years for the developers to make it. You can learn more about that here. Furthermore, he called out generative AI and made it clear they won’t be using it to make this game; more information can be found in this article.
