The latest selection of Star Wars content is a major factor in Fortnite’s player count dropping to its lowest ever amount (since records began in 2023). This is a bad look and significant blow to Disney, Lucasfilm and Epic Games’ billion dollar partnership. Last month, Lucasfilm called Fortnite the future of Star Wars storytelling. Since Star Wars returned in a big way to Epic’s game, the playerbase has dwindled.
On May 1st, Epic Games and Disney kicked off a month of Star Wars content and events within their self-proclaimed “metaverse”. It started with gamers being able to play three permanent Star Wars games made within the game plus hundreds of other modes made by fans. Plus Anakin and Ahsoka got new Clone Wars skins. Next week will see the game play 10 minutes from The Mandalorian and Grogu. More is also scheduled. This all should be a successful time for Fornite and Star Wars but it isn’t.

The Star Wars games made in Fortnite achieved a peak of nearly 200,000 concurrent players combined a few days after release. However, only Droid Tycoon has managed to maintain a player base in the tens of thousands.
As for the entire game platform’s playerbase, it is down more than 10% compared to last month via Fortnite.gg. The highest concurrent peak count is also down 12%. The game is averaging 767,470 players and had a peak of 1,920,673. In comparison, Star Wars Battlefront 2 has a hundred thousand players despite not receiving any new content and updates in over 6 years.
This goes to show Star Wars fans want to play Star Wars in truly authentic like Battlefront and not Fortnite. Many videos showing the fan-made Star Wars games went viral on social media in the past month or so. Even with millions of views, the players are not turning up for Star Wars.
On the flip side, Fortnite players do not want to play Star Wars. They are sharing their hatred of Star Wars being its current content online. Perhaps this reduction in players is the reality check Lucasfilm, Disney and Epic Games need.
