Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu has made its way onto Disney+ and there’s even something totally new for Star Wars in this release.
The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm announced at D23 earlier last month that the Jon Favreau-directed adventure would land on their streaming service on September 2nd. This followed the digital and physical release of the film. Fans can now stream the film in up to 4K anywhere they like using Disney+.
The Mandalorian and Grogu IMAX At Home
The most intriguing part of this release is the IMAX version. When opening the film’s page on Disney+, fans can select a versions tab. From there, you can watch the film in the standard aspect ratio or choose the “IMAX Enhanced” version.
This contains the 20+ minute scenes that were shot in IMAX at their true aspect ratio. There’s even “IMAX Enhanced” sound to go with it. Despite every Star Wars feature film since 2015 having scenes shot in IMAX, there has never been a way to watch the IMAX version digitally. The Mandalorian and Grogu breaks that tradition. This film also had the most IMAX shot runtime of any Star Wars movie so Disney should have put such version available to fans at home.
“Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the latest film available in IMAX Enhanced on Disney+, featuring IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio for all Disney+ subscribers, ensuring that the filmmakers’ creative intent is fully preserved for a more immersive viewing experience at home. Subscribers with certified TVs and AV receivers can also experience IMAX Enhanced sound powered by DTS, featuring the full dynamic range of the original cinematic mix.”
Hopefully this could mean all previous Disney-era Star Wars films get an IMAX version on Disney+ although we should not expect it. It would be far more likely we get this IMAX Enhanced version on future films from Lucasfilm such as Star Wars Starfighter which has once again been filmed partially in IMAX. This is step is a long time coming. Better late than never…
The Mandalorian and Grogu ended its theatrical run with the lowest box office haul of any Star Wars film. It will be interesting to see how the Favreau and Filioni flick film fairs on Disney+ over the next few months. We’ll be taking a look at any data that ends up being published so stay tuned for that.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, an animated special, also hit Disney+ on September 2nd.
