Star Wars gaming just got more depressing. PlayStation have announced that they will no longer be producing discs for any video game in the coming years.
Sony’s PlayStation division announced on Wednesday via a blog post that they’ll cease production of video game discs for all PlayStation games from January 2028. This has been a deeply unpopular decision on social media with fans telling the corporation they are done with buying from the brand. The Japanese console and game maker states they made their choice based on “customer preferences” along with “broader entertainment industry trends”.
What This Means Right Now And In The Future
The end of physical PlayStation discs means from January 2028, new games will no longer be purchasable via disc. Future Star Wars games such as Jedi 3 and Fate of the Old Republic likely won’t have a disc release. There is an expectation the PS6 will not include a disc drive, not even an add-on version, so discs for the next console will be non-existent. Sony say publishers can offer game cases with codes inside like GTA 6 is doing.
Every Star Wars title currently in printing (Star Wars Battlefront 2, LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga, Jedi Fallen Order, Survivor, Outlaws and more) will be safe, until their publisher decides to stop printing. This also means upcoming titles such as Star Wars Zero Company and Star Wars Galactic Racer will be fine. Both titles are getting a physical disc version (both are 50GB and can fit on a game disc) when they launch later this year. Monopoly Star Wars Heroes vs Villains only released on Tuesday with a physical disc copy. We also reported how the Dark Forces Remaster got a new disc version a few months ago. All of them are safe, for now.

Whilst most video games are bought digitally these days, the Star Wars fans in the gaming space do like to purchase discs from a galaxy far, far away more than the average gamer. For example, LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga sold and continues to sell very well physically. It has sold over 16 million copies since launch (becoming the 4th best selling Star Wars game within months) thanks to its strong retail presence and lower standard price point.
Sony’s decision follows Disney failing to make every Star Wars live action production on Blu-Ray/DVD. The Book of Boba Fett is still only legally available on Disney+ for example. Also, video game juggernaut GTA 6 will be digital only when it releases later this year. It seems like this is the final nail in the coffin for video game discs.
It Gets Worse
On the same day as the disc production news, PlayStation also revealed they will be shutting down the PS3 and PS Vita stores starting in August. This means games such as LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, The Force Unleashed and more cannot be purchased digitally once the store stops working. The total global shutdown will occur in July 2027 so you have just 1 year to purchase any game digitally.
