Jon Favreau, the creator of the hit Disney+ Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, and director of the upcoming theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu (May 22nd), may have just dropped a hint that the writer-director might be ready to step away from a galaxy far, far away.
Earlier today, Disney hosted a special event where they unveiled a slate of new merchandise for The Mandalorian and Grogu which Jon Favreau attended. Favreau spoke about the differences on making Star Wars for TV and making it for the big screen.
Favreau however did not share many plot details for the film when pressed, but did share that more clues will be revealed to the world soon, possibly hinting at a future trailer release, something that Star Wars fans have been itching for in recent weeks. We theorised as to when fans can expect to see a new trailer in a previous article.
However, the most interesting thing to come from this event, at least to us, was Favreau seemingly sharing that he might be ready to move on from the Star Wars franchise. Per Polygon, Favreau said, “I’ve been working on Star Wars now for seven years and to be able to step up to doing it as a film feels like a culmination of what I’m working on.”
Why He’d Leave Now

The first season of The Mandalorian aired over 7 years ago on Disney+ with Favreau probably working on the idea for years before we even saw a single shot from the hit series, so there’s no wonder that the filmmaker has now dropped a hint that he may be moving on from Star Wars.
Favreau gave fans three seasons of The Mandalorian and introduced the world to two new iconic characters, Din Djarin and Grogu. He also wrote The Book of Boba Fett and produced both Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. Jon Favreau’s next directorial effort, The Mandalorian and Grogu is due to hit cinemas on May 22nd, 2026.
