The Mandalorian and Grogu, the first new live-action Star Wars movie in seven years, is being kicked out of select IMAX screens early. Disney and Lucasfilm are staring down the barrel of a box office bomb. It just keeps getting worse for Din Djarin and his little green friend.
In a tweet from official IMAX Twitter account, the Canadian company announced Masters of the Universe would be showing in the format from June 5th. It was previously not set to show be shown in IMAX. This means The Mandalorian and Grogu has been put on the chopping block well ahead of schedule. Truly unprecedented for a franchise like Star Wars.Â
You might be wondering why that is. Well, the film has suffered a 70% drop at that box office last weekend. This is a massive fall for a Star Wars film. This was worse than Solo: A Star Wars Story. It only earned $24m domestically which is behind two young YouTuber-made films: Obsession and Backrooms. The global haul of cash is now at $246.6m after over a week.

This is an embarrassing situation for a few reasons. IMAX has been a major part of the film’s marketing since it all began. Almost half an hour after the entire film is shot on IMAX. Twenty-odd minutes of the film was shown for free in select IMAX locations. It was being talked up so much. Now, it is being reduced and making way for a IP which has been dormant for some time.Â
Last week, we covered how The Mandalorian and Grogu’s budget including marketing is $300m. Lots of work to be done to earn all of its money back. We’ll have to wait and see if the film has long legs with audiences continuing to go and see it.
