A couple of new tidbits about the highly rumoured Star Wars Battlefront 3 have come out. It’s going to be a tough read for fans of Mass Effect and BioWare plus disappoint fans waiting for a new Battlefront title.
Last week, EA confirmed they’d be shutting down BioWare and cancelling the next Mass Effect game. Saudi Arabian and Jared Kushner owned company also revealed DICE and Respawn would come together to build a new shooter game. Variety, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and more had information from sources claiming it to be Star Wars Battlefront 3. It was touted as in “active development” by Variety. Now a few more key details have come to light.
Battlefront Blame
Jason Schreier reports the main reason behind BioWare’s demise is Star Wars Battlefront 3. According to the journalist, there has been a “recent emergence of an opportunity” with Lucasfilm to develop a sequel in the best selling franchise.
This deal with Lucasfilm came just as EA’s takeover by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund was completed back in August. EA has now been riddled with nearly $20 billion of debt.
Development Details

EA executives saw they had two sci-fi games that will cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make. In the end, they decided to cut Mass Effect and BioWare in order to take on a “less risky, more predictable bet” in Star Wars Battlefront 3.
Furthermore, Schreier notes that “Star Wars Battlefront III has not even begun development yet”. This is in stark contrast to the next Mass Effect game which had already been in production for a few years. A leaked internal trailer shows the game was coming along nicely. This is terrible for all involved.
In other Battlefront news, ex-staff who worked on the previous games want to return for Battlefront 3. Plus, we reported on last week, Battlefront 2 was the best selling Star Wars game last year.
